When someone calls us ugly or dumb, it can feel as if our confidence has been taken away. But others are outsiders; they cannot know us as well as we can know ourselves. The trouble begins when we do not know ourselves, so we start looking at ourselves through others’ eyes. Self-knowledge here simply means being honest with ourselves about where our likes, fears and desires come from. What would change if we looked at ourselves directly, and not through others’ opinions?

Real love is not measured by comfort, agreement, or preserving relationships at any cost. It is revealed when one has the courage to challenge falsehood, embrace uncomfortable truths, and even risk a relationship for another's freedom and growth. Truth is not a fixed destination but a continuous rejection of illusion. Genuine relationships, mature guidance, and authentic scriptures all serve as mirrors that help us see and dissolve our own falseness.

The biggest weakness of modern education is not that it fails to keep pace with technology, but that it neglects self-knowledge. Students are trained to build identities around qualifications and careers, making them rigid in a world that demands constant change. Real adaptability, innovation, and lifelong learning come not from acquiring more skills, but from understanding oneself and letting go of fixed identities.

Humanity's greatest crisis arises from the imbalance between immense external progress and inadequate inner understanding. While technology, wealth, and knowledge have expanded unprecedentedly, unchecked desires and ignorance continue to fuel conflict, inequality, and environmental destruction. Sustainable change requires mass-based education of the self so individuals understand their motives and use science, technology, capital, and power with wisdom, responsibility, and inner clarity rather than unconscious craving.

The ego is not a real, independent entity but a bundle of conditioning that creates the illusion of a separate "I" and becomes the source of suffering. Self-observation is not introspection or analysis but moment-to-moment honesty about what is happening within. Real freedom comes when this false center is seen through, allowing life to function naturally without the burden of psychological ownership.

Life cannot be transformed by knowledge of the external world alone; it also requires understanding the one who experiences it. Science, technology, and logic are powerful, but they remain incomplete without self-knowledge and inner honesty. Lasting solutions to personal and global crises emerge when the same rigor used to study the world is turned inward, examining one's motives, intentions, and consciousness with equal seriousness.

Most people move through life unconsciously, mistaking inherited beliefs, ambitions, and social conditioning for personal choice. Careers, relationships, goals, and even identities often arise more from habit and circumstance than from conscious understanding. Real freedom begins by questioning the actor rather than the action, examining the assumptions behind one’s choices, and awakening from the psychological “coma” in which life is merely happening rather than being consciously lived.

Listener: Why is it that people don’t recognise?

Go to the right place. Go where the disease and the disturbance are. Have the faith and the courage to look at the problem in the eye. And if you can do that, you might find that the solution is present in the problem. That the solution is very much obvious. That the solution was elusive exactly because you are avoiding the problem.

Questioner: How should I identify my calling? If I have two options in front of me – I am doing engineering but I want to know and go for film-making. Would it be okay if I go in that direction? I like both the ways, Engineering as well as film-making.

Achievement is the central disease, there is something to be achieved. So, develop whether as a verb indicating yourself or your students is actually not very appropriate. There is no question of development. There can only be a realization, that I am already developed. There can only be a realization and that realization; believe me, changes everything. Do not think that after that realization things will remain the same. In a very fundamental way, things will change.

There's a small secret here. It's not that we do not understand that we are being fooled. We choose to be fooled. When that fellow comes to you and professes his or her love it's not that you do not know that it's not love. It's just that you find it to be a convenient, comfortable bargain. Like masks greeting each other. Truth should be the simplest, easiest, nearest thing.

Questioner: Who can best answer the basic questions related to human existence or reasons for survival, our life, our emotions, and our death? Can science with its metanarratives answer these questions, or will the Upanishads answer them?
Acharya Prashant: Science does not even look into these questions. Science is considered,…
Knowledge alone cannot transform life; it can become another object of the ego. True knowledge is self-knowledge—a mirror that exposes and destroys false ideas about oneself. Ravana may have been knowledgeable, but without self-knowledge, knowledge can become a tool for exploitation. Wisdom is not something to acquire; it is innate. Self-knowledge is the process of unbecoming unwise by clearing away the nonsense we have gathered.
Question: Why do I feel lost?
Acharya Prashant: Because, you are asking this question.
We ‘think’ that we are lost, equally, we ‘think’ that we are not lost. The same place from where the thought, the perception of being lost, or not lost arises, that place is the same place…
Friendships naturally change as people follow different paths in life. When you remain focused on your true purpose, you stop clinging to those who only accompany you briefly. Instead of dwelling on memories or fearing others' intentions, examine your own expectations and self-deception first. Honest self-awareness brings clarity, wiser relationships, and the freedom to move forward without resentment or attachment.
Superstition does not begin with rituals alone; it begins with unquestioned beliefs about the self. Science can remove many false beliefs, but complete freedom requires Self-knowledge. Vedanta, philosophy and meditation help expose the ego, making awakening possible. Religion becomes meaningful only when it encourages Self-knowledge rather than blind belief. Real freedom comes not from accepting inherited ideas but from understanding oneself through direct observation and awareness.
Materialism and emotionality are not opposites; emotions themselves often arise from material desires, fears, and biological conditioning. The real distinction is between the material-emotional world and spiritual understanding. Spirituality is not another belief, emotion, or acquisition but the clear observation of thoughts, desires, and assumptions. Many personal and social crises stem from unexamined beliefs, and meaningful change begins by questioning them, speaking truthfully, and paying attention to what occupies the mind.
Gen Z isn't rebellious or individualistic - they're simply following their generation's conditioning, just as previous generations followed theirs. Real rebellion begins with honest inquiry into why you live as you do. The primitive restlessness driving all humans remains unchanged; only its expression differs. True freedom requires questioning borrowed desires, recognizing that your ambitions, tastes, and choices aren't genuinely yours. Vedanta teaches this: stop chasing false questions and confront who you actually are beneath all conditioning.
L1: Because you are then a threat…
I am asking you, who is more important? The mobile phone or the man holding the mobile phone more important? Unfortunately, your education is such that it will tell you everything about the mobile phone, but nothing about the man. They ask you to keep looking outwards but they never tell you to look inwards. Self-education is more valuable than the rest of your education put together. Has your education ever brought you close to yourself? Now you decide what is more important.
Most of us look outwards for reasons of security, of prestige, because we want to have career progress, or because we are just curious and we do not even know what’s behind the curiosity. And then there are those who want to know the curious one itself. If there is no conscious point behind your choices or actions, then the default point is biology. The other center is when you are coming from an illuminated point that wants to know, not because it does not know why it wants to know, but because it is interested in knowing, and therefore the knower itself.
It’s a great thing not to be submissive to authority. One doesn’t needlessly bow down, because that would be detrimental to one’s interests. So, it’s all right if you are careful. But being careful is one thing, and becoming psychotic about that is another thing. Obviously, let’s try on one’s own first. But we all know how limited we are beyond a point. And when we come to that point, one needs to look beyond herself, that one needs to seek help.
The mind has been living for long in patterns. It knows no other way of being. The movement of patterns is gross. The movement of egoless action is very subtle, and the habituated mind will initially fail to notice it. You will have to wait like one waits for a lover. Do not expect that the new action, the new voice, the new guide will be of the same type, the same nature as the old one. This will be new, really new. Be ready to be surprised.
If you close your eyes and write, do you need to see what you have written? Observation is an honest acknowledgement: “This is what I’m writing.” It is a subtle thing of honesty that happens on its own. What obstructs it is your determination, your stubborn resolve not to see the inner fact. That’s what you have to dispense with. “I refuse to buy the arguments of the false.” Once you refuse that, then the inner fact is obviously visible.
Why do you expect the universe to be a fair and just place? That’s not philosophy, that’s a lot of fiction. This whole thing is very, very random. But we want to assign causality to it. We want to say, “Things happen for such and such a reason.” Why are we allowing randomness to assume meaning? A life without meaning terrifies us. There is no meaning in external material life; it is absurd. But there can be meaning in the one who you are.
Growth is a reduction, growth is a dissolution. True growth is rather a contraction, bidding goodbye, letting go, dropping, unburdening, unloading, unbecoming. Those are the real words. This birth that we are carrying as our identity is just suffering for the one who is carrying it. Why should you carry something that simply burdens you? That’s what is intended to be read.
Spirituality is not about obtaining heaven, or pleasing gods, or accumulating virtue. It is about taking care of the quality of your experience, because that is all that is there in life. The experiencer has to be seen. If the experiencer operates from the wrong center, then even flying won’t help. When you are operating from the right center, even crawling is all right.
Questioner: If love is death of ego, then loving man will be just soul. So, is love Moksha (Salvation)?
Acharya Prashant: Everything that you just said, is a concept in your mind. Ego lives on concepts; ego lives on thoughts—concepts are thoughts.
What is the definition of a concept? Where…
If you do not respect the highest, then you're not respecting yourself. You're just respecting some little and lowly part of yourself, which is not self-respect at all, then. When you have real self-respect, then you give yourself the highest. You won't give yourself some cheap thing. Pay the price for being with the right people, the right books, being at the right places. Love yourself enough to give yourself the highest. Don't settle for anything lower or lesser.
Doing something totally means doing it from a point of totality. It does not mean how far you go in doing that thing. It is not the action that matters; it is the point of origin of the action that matters. Action will be dictated by situations, but your center cannot be. Living totally means that you remain the same in the moment of your deepest fulfillment and deepest frustration.
It is in this world that you locate the genesis of your suffering, and do whatever you have to do. It is here that you have to ask yourself — if I really do value love, is there love at my workplace? If I value realization, do I realize what it means to be a mother? It is in the middle of this saṃsāra that you'll have to ask these questions, that you have to seek salvation. You cannot go anywhere else.
Self-enquiry does not mean enquiring into the Truth. The mind cannot enquire into the Truth. That’s the fundamental message of Vedanta. Truth should be the centre of your life. Spirituality is about enquiring into your daily life — and that alone is self-enquiry. With Truth at the centre of your life, look at your life — your job, your wife, your family, your body, your moods, everything.
‘Pop spirituality’ can include anything — some kriya, snakes, spirits, ghosts — things that can neither be verified nor negated. India had a better name: ‘Adhyatma’, which means ‘self-knowledge’, not ‘spirituality’. And once you realize it's about knowing yourself through self-inquiry, it becomes the ruthless negation of all imaginary products of the ego — with deep respect for facts.
There is nothing called ‘positive attitude’ or ‘negative attitude’. All attitudes are enemies of understanding and reality. An intelligent man lives a life free of attitude. Within attitude, you approach reality with a fixed, frozen mindset. When you come to a situation, come to it afresh—not with a ‘positive’ or a ‘negative’ attitude, but with real intelligence.
They don't contradict each other. Existentialists like Sartre argue that humans cannot suppress consciousness and are 'condemned to be free.' We are born without a predetermined purpose—existence precedes essence. You exist first and must then discover your essence. In the spirit of 'Neti Neti' (neither this nor that), no external force can define your essence; it is your freedom to consciously determine what life is for.
Question: Pranam Acharya ji. Acharya ji, allow me to apologize for the abrupt question last time. I was a little afraid of writing another question. However, I do wish to write. Please talk about it—as I am an avid listener—on what you consider shall be good for me.
Here is…
Vedanta is the medicine for the human condition, and the human condition is one of misery. We need to go to Vedanta if we want our welfare. The Upanishads are not ritual- or belief-based but are truly open and free for inquiry. The Vedanti is always saying, "I want to know, and I have faith that knowing is possible, so I keep inquiring."
What you are demanding is something absolutely extraordinary. You are demanding freedom from body identification, and there is no way basic acts of goodness towards the world, can fetch you freedom from the fundamental bondage itself. Please be grateful. The equation is not deceiving you. To the extent you are doing good things, life is rewarding you with goodness. So, the game is fair there. But what you are demanding from life is far beyond the goodness you are practicing. You are demanding liberation itself.
Self-help books aim to help the self without investigating what it really is. The self has desires, and the book guides you to fulfill them, which gratifies the self. The way to help the ego is to reveal its falseness. It doesn’t need help; it needs dissolution. Vedanta explores the ‘I’ to dissolve it. That’s where you’ll find rigorous self-enquiry and freedom from the sufferings of the self.
There are a million spiritual seekers who keep on practising observation and find that their lives are not changing at all. Just observing your daily life will often be of very little help. Observation of your own condition must be accompanied by exposure to something beyond yourself. Those who keep saying, 'Just observe and things will happen.' No, nothing happens just by observing. Love is needed. Love gives you the patience to wait. You require the depth of love that is prepared to wait till eternity.
'The observer is the observed; an honest observation dissolves them both.' Or, 'The observer is the observed, and both are false.' We lay a lot of emphasis on the world, assuming it to be the Truth. If the world is an entity independent of everything, then it has to be the Truth, right? Truth is that which is independent of everything.
Because we all carry identities wherever we go, from these identities come ready-made opinions, and these opinions never allow us to look at the truth. We have no understanding of who we are, and all over, self-knowledge is limited to these identities that have been handed over to us by the environment, by others, by parents, by society, by education, by others, and it’s a very funny situation. You are unable to know the reality because you are determined not to know the reality.
When you know that you can not be harmed, then you let the change come to you. Then, you do not lose your inner poise in front of changing conditions. This is equanimity. For equanimity, you require a very good driver, a totally dependable driver. Our driver is the Ego. It does not allow the Absolute to drive us. The Ego is so arrogant that it goes and sits on the throne, the sacred place, that is reserved only for the Beloved, only for God. It has no right to be there. Dethrone it!
A scripture is a book that tells you about yourself. A scripture has to deal essentially with self-knowledge. A book that talks of dietary choices cannot be called a scripture. A person who talks of the kind of things you must eat to enhance your health and such things cannot be called a Guru. Shastra is what deals with self-knowledge; a guru is one who encourages self-knowledge in you.
It is not events, but the meanings that you hold of them that agitate you. A great happening in the world that you do not take to be related to yourself, does it bother you greatly? It doesn’t because you do not enforce the ‘outer equals inner’ rule in such cases. But the moment you bring about, bring in that dangerous equation, that dubious identity, ‘outer is inner,’ that is the moment you start shivering and panicking. We decide our triggers, they don’t just happen.
Self-help doesn't help. Its approach is, “I am sad as my desires are not fulfilled, so the way to help myself is to fulfill desires.” They never realize their lives are driven by biological, social, and cultural forces outside of themselves. Spirituality offers the only real solution: “Before helping the self, one must know what the self really is."
Why do we need to talk of the purpose of life? Because we don’t feel alright as we are and where we are. Because we don’t feel alright where we are, therefore we need to be somewhere else. Because we don’t feel good about the way our self-concept and our self-image is, therefore there is a need for change, right?
“I thank the Lord for all that he has given me.” This is a totally nonsensical prayer. You should thank for what he has not given you. "Thanks for not giving me disease." It's very easy to miss that you do not have a disease. Truth is so easy to miss because it is an absence. Truth is always ‘not’ something. It is the absences that you must be thankful for.
