First of all, religion gets into all kinds of worldly things. Who made the rivers? Which tree is sacred and which tree is not? What to wear? Where to sleep? Whom to marry? What to eat? Religion gets into all these things which are none of religion's business. True religion is just an inquiry into the ego, the self. "Who am I?" That's religion.

हनुमान चालीसा की शुरुआत ही, "जय हनुमान ज्ञान गुन सागर" से होती है। पहला ही शब्द 'ज्ञान' है। जब ज्ञान रहता है, तो ये भूत-प्रेत आदि व्यर्थताएँ दिमाग़ में आती ही नहीं। भूत-पिशाच आदि का कोई अस्तित्व नहीं होता, लेकिन जिसका अंधविश्वास है कि भूत-प्रेत तो होते ही हैं, उसको संतों ने कहा कि हनुमान जी का जाप करोगे तो भूत-प्रेत निकट नहीं आएँगे। हनुमान, श्रीराम तक पहुँचने का साधन हैं। एक बार श्रीराम के निकट आ जाओगे, तो अंधविश्वास से स्वयं ही मुक्त हो जाओगे।

नागपंचमी: क्या साँप सच में दूध पीते हैं?

नागपंचमी में साँप को पकड़कर दूध पिलाते हैं, इसमें साँपों को बहुत कष्ट दिया जाता है। साँप मैमल नहीं, रेप्टाइल है; वह दूध नहीं पीता। पर ज़बरदस्ती एक छवि बनाई गई है, क्योंकि हमारे दिमाग में साँप का आदिम डर बैठा हुआ है। प्रतीक के तौर पर देखें तो साँप का अर्थ है प्रकृति का वो रूप जिससे आप बहुत डरते हो। शिव का साँप से संबंध प्रतीकात्मक है, उसमें यह सीख दी जाती है कि प्रकृति से सही संबंध रखोगे तो उससे डरोगे नहीं, और प्रकृति से न डरने का अर्थ है 'मृत्यु से न डरना'।
