हनुमान चालीसा की शुरुआत ही, "जय हनुमान ज्ञान गुन सागर" से होती है। पहला ही शब्द 'ज्ञान' है। जब ज्ञान रहता है, तो ये भूत-प्रेत आदि व्यर्थताएँ दिमाग़ में आती ही नहीं। भूत-पिशाच आदि का कोई अस्तित्व नहीं होता, लेकिन जिसका अंधविश्वास है कि भूत-प्रेत तो होते ही हैं, उसको संतों ने कहा कि हनुमान जी का जाप करोगे तो भूत-प्रेत निकट नहीं आएँगे। हनुमान, श्रीराम तक पहुँचने का साधन हैं। एक बार श्रीराम के निकट आ जाओगे, तो अंधविश्वास से स्वयं ही मुक्त हो जाओगे।

सही और गलत उधार की बातें हैं। जो बात एक देश में सही है, वो दूसरे में गलत मानी जाती है। जो आज सही है, वो कल गलत था। दो सौ साल पहले भारत में माना जाता था कि पति की मृत्यु पर पत्नी आत्मदाह करें — तब ये सही था। आज कोई इसे स्वीकार नहीं करेगा। तुम भूल जाते हो कि सही-गलत तुम्हें किसी और ने सिखाया है, और उन्हें भी किसी और ने। असली सही यह है कि तुम अपनी समझ और होश से जियो। बेहोशी में किया हर काम गलत है। सही और गलत क्या है, इसके लिए तुम्हारी विवेक-दृष्टि ही काफ़ी है।

एक समूह अपने लिए आचरण के अच्छे-बुरे का जो निर्धारण करता है, उसे नैतिकता कहते हैं। उसमें ज्ञानियों द्वारा दी गई सीख नहीं, केवल बहुमत का ज़ोर होता है। इसीलिए अलग-अलग समाजों में नैतिकता-अनैतिकता के अलग-अलग मापदंड होते हैं और वह समय-समय पर बदलती भी रहती है। नैतिकता एक अंधी-सी चीज़ है। उसमें मनुष्य के विवेक के लिए कोई जगह नहीं होती। सही-गलत का फ़ैसला न समाज करेगा न परंपरा; इसका फ़ैसला सिर्फ़ आपकी आंतरिक जागृति ही कर सकती है।

And you will not be able to develop any direct relationship with the Upanishads. But when you look at the entire body of the Vedas, what you see is a very human thing. यदि तुम पूर्व-निर्धारित ढ़र्रे पर ही जीते हो तो किसी ज्योतिषी की भी ज़रूरत नहीं है। कोई राह चलता भी तुम्हारी शक्ल देखकर बता देगा कि बाईस तक पढ़ाई, पच्चीस में सगाई, फिर विदाई, फिर दनादन पिटाई। क्योंकि जो ढ़र्रे पर चल रहा है उसका सबकुछ तय है, इसलिए उसका भविष्य निर्धारित किया जा सकता है। परंतु यदि तुम्हारा जीवन आज़ादी में, मुक्ति में, होश में बीत रहा है, तो कोई भी ज्योतिषी नहीं बता सकता, कि तुम्हारा कल कैसा होगा।

हम इतने छोटे से रह गए हैं और हमारे सामने आ जाएँ बिलकुल कि जैसे सचमुच थे राम और जो सचमुच रौद्र रूप है दुर्गा का तो बात हमें अपमान की लगती है कि ये तो इतने बड़े, हम इतने छोटे तो क्या करते हैं? हम उनको ही छोटा बना देते हैं ताकि वो हमारे हाथ का खिलवाड़ बन जाएँ, हमारे हाथ का खिलौना बन जाएँ। लोग छोटी-छोटी देवी लेकर घुम रहे हैं इस बार। ये देवी हैं कि पहाड़ से भी बड़ी पहाड़, और हम उनको क्या बना रहे हैं? तो यही है ताकि सबकुछ हमारे खिलौने जैसा हो पाए। क्योंकि धर्म को ही हमने अपना खिलौना बना लिया है, “लोगन राम खिलौना जाना।”

जाप भर करने से क्या होगा अगर बोध नहीं हुआ? समझ जागने के बजाय, वह रुक जाती है जब आप रटने में विश्वास करने लगते हैं, और चेतना जड़ हो जाती है। मंत्र अथवा श्लोकों को रटकर समझ नहीं पाएंगे। साफ़ उच्चारण एक प्रशंसनीय बात है, पर उच्चारण भर से काम नहीं चलेगा। वेद का अर्थ ही होता है ‘जानना’, ‘बोध’; अतः उनके मंत्रों को रटकर दोहराना बहुत अपर्याप्त है।

असल में नकली ग्रंथ को, या नकली साधक को, या नकली आध्यात्मिक गुरु को पहचानने का ये एकदम रामबाण तरीका है। ये देखो कि उसका साइंस, विज्ञान के प्रति रुख क्या है। जिस स्पिरिचुअल (आध्यात्मिक) ग्रंथ में, या टीचर में साइंस के लिए इज़्ज़त न हो, वो आदमी साइंस को ही नहीं स्पिरिचुअलिटी को भी इज़्ज़त नहीं देता। अगर आपको कोई स्पिरिचुअल लीडर मिला जो साइंस का मज़ाक उड़ाता है, या साइंस के महत्व पर ज़ोर नहीं देता, तो वो आदमी साइंस ही नहीं स्पिरिचुअलिटी से भी अनभिज्ञ है। उसको पूरी तरह हटाओ।

Now, God and reality are two different things. God and Truth are not the same thing. The mark of religiosity or true spirituality is an abiding faith in the truth.
