15 नवंबर को गीता सत्र से कुछ घंटे पहले, देश की बड़ी पशु कार्यकर्ता, गौरी मौलेखी जी का एक संदेश आया। उन्होंने आचार्य जी से नेपाल में होने वाले ‘गढ़ीमाई महोत्सव’ के विषय पर बिहार के, मुख्यमंत्री, मुख्य सचिव और प्रेस से बातचीत के लिए पटना आने का अनुरोध किया। यह एक गंभीर मुद्दा था—हजारों जानवरों की जान बचाने का और एक सदियों पुरानी कुप्रथा के विरुद्ध आवाज़ उठाने का।

On the evening of November 15, just hours before a scheduled Gita session, a message arrived from Gauri Maulekhi, a prominent animal rights activist. She requested Acharya Prashant to join her in Patna the following morning to meet the Chief Secretary of Bihar and address the press about the Gadhimai festival in Nepal. This was no ordinary request. It was a plea to save thousands of animals and to raise a voice against a centuries-old practice of cruelty disguised as tradition.

वो जो सामने आपके एक जीव है, उसकी आँखों में देखो। उसको क्या फ़र्क पड़ता है कि उसका झटका हुआ कि हलाल हुआ; वो तो जान से गया न? और उसने कुछ ऐसा गुनाह नहीं कर दिया था कि आपने उसको मार दिया। और उसको मार करके आपको कोई पुण्य कहीं से नहीं मिल गया। ये काम चाहे हिंदू करे, चाहे मुस्लिम करे, कोई करे — इससे कैसे कोई पुण्य हो सकता है? ये तो सीधे-सीधे पाप का काम है।

जिसकी चेतना पूरे तरीके से उसकी देह से आबद्ध है, वह पशु है। पशुबलि का मतलब जानवर मारना नहीं है, पशुबलि का मतलब अपने भीतर के जानवर को मारना है। बकरे को नहीं मारना है, ये जो भीतर ‘मैं-मैं’ चलता रहता है, इसे मारना है। एक पशु को मारकर खाने से तुम्हें शांति कैसे मिल जाएगी? इससे कौन-सा देवता प्रसन्न हो जाएगा? ये क्रूरता और मूर्खता की बात है। वास्तविक धर्म कहता है — “भीतर वाले पशु को मारो।”

Oppression should not see caste, gender, creed or colour, and it should not see species either. The moral threshold is sentience, not intelligence. An animal feels pain as fully as a human does, whether or not it can explain its suffering.

कुत्ते को खाने के लिए ऐसा ऑर्गेनिक मैटर चाहिए, जो वहाँ बाहर सड़क पर खुले में पड़ा हुआ है। और जैसे-जैसे समृद्धि आती है, वैसे-वैसे उनको खाने को मिलना ही बंद होता जाता है। या तो आप उन्हें अपने घरों में ले आइए, नहीं तो वे बाहर अब सड़कों पर ज़िंदा नहीं रह सकते। आप पशु-प्रेमी हैं, इससे अच्छा कुछ हो ही नहीं सकता, पर यह बात थोड़ी विचित्र-सी लगती है कि हम दूसरी प्रजातियों और क्लाइमेट चेंज की बात नहीं करते। अगर हम में सचमुच प्यार है, तो वह प्यार और प्रजातियों को हम क्यों नहीं दिखा रहे हैं?

जानवर अपनी जैविक प्रवृत्तियों के अनुसार जीते हैं, जबकि मनुष्य के पास विवेक और चुनाव की क्षमता है। इसलिए अपने व्यवहार को सही ठहराने के लिए पशुओं का उदाहरण देना उचित नहीं है। जीवन में महत्वपूर्ण यह है कि हम सचेत होकर निर्णय लें। इसी तरह खेल में सफलता तब मिलती है जब ध्यान खेल पर हो, न कि जीत, प्रशंसा या दूसरों को प्रभावित करने पर। परिणाम की चिंता बढ़ते ही एकाग्रता टूटती है और प्रदर्शन प्रभावित होता है।

हम जो एनिमल लवर भी बनते हैं, तो आमतौर पर क्या करते हैं, मुझे आसपास जो दिख रहा है, मैं उसका ख़्याल कर लूँगा। तो ये तो तुम्हारा बहुत संयोग से रिश्ता बना न, बोध की बात तो ये है कि मैं देखूँ कि पूरी पृथ्वी पर क्या चल रहा है और उसके लिए काम करूँगा। और बिल्कुल ये हो सकता है कि जितना समय आप चार जानवरों की सेवा में लगा रहे हो, उतना समय अगर आप जानवरों के लिए सही तरीक़े से लगा दो, तो आप 4 हज़ार जानवर बचा दो। तो बताओ, फिर ये चार जानवरों की सेवा करना प्रेम हुआ या हिंसा?

खेत खाली जगह नहीं है; खेत एक ह्यूमन कॉलोनी है। खेत का मतलब होता है कि तुमने वहाँ की पूरी प्रकृति नष्ट कर दी है। 80% जो खेती होती है, वो सिर्फ़ इंसान को अन्न खिलाने के लिए नहीं, वो इंसान को मीट खिलाने के लिए होती है। तो जंगल काट के तुमने खेत बनाया, और वो खेती इसलिए कर रहे हो कि अब जानवर काटोगे। अगर हम में थोड़ी चेतना जगेगी, तो जैसे हम मनुष्यों को मारने को अपराध समझते हैं, वैसे ही हम जीवों को मारने को भी अपराध घोषित करेंगे, और पेड़ काटने को भी अपराध घोषित करेंगे।

जो चीज़ तुम्हें सबसे प्यारी हो, प्यार से यहाँ पर अर्थ है मोह का, आसक्ति का। जिससे तुमने अपनी आसक्ति बैठा ली है, जिससे लिप्त हो गये हो व्यर्थ ही, उसको त्यागना ही बलि है और ये बात ग्रन्थ बार-बार ज़ोर-ज़ोर से, दोहरा-दोहराकर, चिल्लाकर कहते हैं कि बलि की सही परिभाषा ये है। लेकिन इंसान ने बलि के नाम पर जानवरों को काटना शुरू कर दिया, हमसे ज़्यादा बड़ा जानवर कोई है क्या?

Stray dogs need garbage, and with waste reducing, their populations in urban areas are bound to decline. Not just humans, even dogs suffer — crushed by vehicles, beaten up, falling ill, etc. They can either be integrated into our homes with care and responsibility or face extinction from our streets. It is heartwarming to see humans supporting one species, but why doesn’t our heart bleed for the crowds of animals we are slaughtering every day, making many of them extinct forever? Climate change is the biggest threat and is responsible for the maximum misery to animals.

When you look into the eyes of an animal, and if you are really awake, you will only see your own deep innocence, which might be hidden from you. It is impossible to see anything or anybody else when you really look. That thing that you look at, and that which looks back at you is most prominently visible in the eyes. Look at the animal, pause and meditate for a while — and then go ahead and slaughter it, if you can. You’ll only be slaughtering yourself.

If God stands for innocence, trust, surrender, then animals are closer to God. But man values himself by his ability to exploit. If you always feel hollow and hungry, then the entire universe is but a resource for you. One then wants to exploit the man, the woman, the child, the animals — everything. So, someone who does not want to look at the universe as a resource will not want to kill or consume anything in a violent way.

If you can deal with human ignorance only then there is the chance, we will be more friendly, more compassionate towards animals. But, when you look at someone who comes from a meat-eating family or the traditional kind of Indian Vaishnav family where milk and ‘kheer’ and ‘dahi’ are a staple, then it comes as a shock to that person, that milk involves cruelty. It’s a totally alien and a disturbing concept. So, it has to be brought out with due expertise and that does not mean that you have to be especially trained in communicating these matters, just that one has to be sensitive that the other person might not really know.

Who is most like you? You, yourself. So, be empathetic to yourself first. Then, who is most like you? Your mother, father, siblings; show empathy to them. Then, your neighbors, extended family, and finally, be empathetic to all. Lacking compassion for other conscious beings will only harm you. Kill the animal, and in some way the animal is liberated of its misery, at least in the physical sense. But you, having eaten the animal, will suffer. The flesh keeps you alive, and tomorrow awaits—a dark tomorrow as your punishment.
