Does the Gita Justify Caste? Unravelling the Misinterpretation

Was the Gita Meant to Uphold Caste? The answer is clear and direct: ‘Absolutely not.’ One of the Gita’s most profound declarations is found in Chapter 5, Verse 18: “The wise see with equal vision a Brahmin, a cow, a dog, and an outcaste.” In our Gita sessions, we often recite a verse: ‘Our caste is Atma. Our lineage is Brahm. Truth is our father, and Liberation is our religion.’ This is the identity the Gita calls for — not in ritual, but in how we live.

What Is Self-Enquiry?

Self-enquiry does not mean enquiring into the Truth. The mind cannot enquire into the Truth. That’s the fundamental message of Vedanta. Truth should be the centre of your life. Spirituality is about enquiring into your daily life — and that alone is self-enquiry. With Truth at the centre of your life, look at your life — your job, your wife, your family, your body, your moods, everything.

It will not allow you to look at yourself.

When you look at the body, you see that the body was founded by something outside of itself: one cell from the father, one cell from the mother. And whatever the body feeds on — food, water, air, sunlight — all of that comes from outside the body. You, who are conscious, have hardly anything in common with the body. Also, the wise man says, “The body is not mine,” because he doesn't control the body. The body will die one day whether one wants it or not.

Climate is an entire industry, which receives hundreds of billions of dollars in funding for tech-based crisis solutions. And technological or scientific or policy measures are just eyewash. On the other pole, a lot of money is flowing towards climate denialism. We do not have enough time to wait for everyone to see on their own that we are on the edge of the final calamity. What you need now is not persuasiveness, but power. The Gita is a message to fight. It’s a war call.

Irrespective of your subjective state, it remains as it is. Truth just turns you silent.

There is no particular glory or joy in defeat. Victory is likable because man associates joy with victory and the loss of joy with defeat. Your victories will not bring you joy. If your victories are bringing you joy, then it is a very shallow joy. And when joy there is, joy remains equally in victory and in defeat. Victory appeared favorable, defeat appeared unfavorable, the poet is celebrating the fact that that which appeared unfavorable is no more unfavorable.

What Really Is Ego?

A common misconception that many of us have is that ‘ego is pride’, but it is far more pervasive than pride. It is the sum total of everything that we have taken from the outside and accepted as our beliefs and identities without applying intelligence. But we are not a sum total of external influences. Even if everything external is taken away, the pure existence still remains — we have an existence of our own. Ego is this forgetfulness of our pure existence.

We don’t feel ashamed admitting that we are attached, as if something beautiful is happening. If you are with the wrong one, and not even prepared to see that you are with the wrong one — that’s attachment. And you can never be attached to the Right One; there is only dissolution.

The Truth cannot be objectified as a thing, place, person, or book. So, don't be too quick to accept your own assessments, judgments, likes, dislikes, and experiences. Whatever you're seeing is seen by "you" — the Ego — and you are no absolute. Everything must be available to enquiry, investigation, and questioning — and questioning cannot happen if you declare that you’ve already come to the Truth. Never believe that the journey has ended or that the ego itself is the Truth.

So, Yog has to be an inquiry into who we are, and what it is that we really want.

Caste is something that the Upanishads actively dismiss. So many of our saints came from the so-called lower castes and tried to purge Hinduism of its nonsense, but still, caste continues for two reasons. First, a human is born with an innate tendency to divide and separate. And second, a light has to be awakened in him, and that effort is called real education. We do not receive that education today.

In the jungle, the woman existed only to breed — not to be an artist, scientist, explorer, or thinker. Internally, women still live in this bondage today, driven by these primal instincts, seeking security and protection, even if they appear externally empowered. And internal bondage is far worse than external. This is where wisdom literature becomes her true rescue—when she knows herself, she can use her body for liberation.

Chemicals are reactive; consciousness can wait. Let the elements do what they are doing — 'I am not wedded to the limitations of this chemical godown.' This is what the knowers have called ‘detachment'. They have also called it ‘witnessing'.

Are All the Interesting People Found in Hell?

No! They are not interesting people; they are sick people. It’s just that the very definition of the word 'interesting' has become distorted to their advantage. People in hell are as interesting as a stinking pile of trash is.

Are You Against Marriage?

We are all born married to our desires, despair, and desperation. A woman or a man is not responsible for making us feel bonded or suffocated. It is the feeling of attachment, loneliness, and dependency that troubles you. Get rid of these, and then, if someone comes into your life, it’s alright. If you feel like marrying them, do it; if not, don’t.

What Is Rest?

Rest is to realize that whatever you are doing is ultimately not going to benefit you in terms of result. Rest is to not to hope for a result, but to be already there and because you are already there, so the activity is happening. Now the activity is a game, a pass time, just for fun. You can indulge yourself or you can change the activity. The activity doesn’t really mean much.

Why Do Partners Cheat?

Marriage founded on the body alone is bound to suffer from cheating, as one body can never satisfy anyone. Your association with the other person should be based on love, friendship, and inner fulfillment, not the body. If you are physical and bodily, no loyalty is possible. Loyalty is fundamentally spiritual.

Is Your Mind Your Best Friend or Your Worst Enemy?

The mind is both your best friend and your worst enemy. It’s your friend when it operates with intelligence and attention, but when there is no attention, when there is no care or love, then intelligence does not function. And then, the mind is your worst enemy. A prisoner knows no joy, no freedom, no love. Your own sleep keeps you imprisoned. The moment you wake up, you are free.

Is Self-Love About Being Happy?

Making yourself happy isn't self-love. Self-love is gifting yourself the highest possible. If you do not know what to give yourself, at least abstain from giving yourself toxic and harmful things. Real love is always tough. Self-love is an exercise in reduction, not accumulation. When you work to make your life beautiful, you are truly loving yourself.

Do Love And Attachment Go Together?

Attachment is just a promise. A lack of fulfilment. It is a substitute for love because the real thing is not available. If you find yourself attached, it means there is a desire for love; it means there is a call for love. Know that a fake is presenting itself as a substitute for the real thing.

You say you want something, but you are distracted easily. Ask yourself, "Why am I attracted to anything?" Unless you find that, you are just a plaything in the hands of situations. If you really know, then knowing itself decides for you. Then there is no question of indecision or distraction because there are no options left.

What Does Equanimity Mean in Life?

When you know that you can not be harmed, then you let the change come to you. Then, you do not lose your inner poise in front of changing conditions. This is equanimity. For equanimity, you require a very good driver, a totally dependable driver. Our driver is the Ego. It does not allow the Absolute to drive us. The Ego is so arrogant that it goes and sits on the throne, the sacred place, that is reserved only for the Beloved, only for God. It has no right to be there. Dethrone it!

The real issue is not about time at all. You are spending time exactly according to your values. Don’t ask how to utilize time. Ask yourself, "Do I know what is truly valuable?" When you are clear about what is truly valuable in life, all your time will be devoted to that. Become clear. Know what is truly valuable.

If you are suffering, all that you need to be told is that freedom from disease is possible. No positive, affirmative statement needs to be given. If you are really crying out of pain, do you need to be given dreams of the pink of health? No, You only need to be assured that this pain is not your nature, and that is all.

Live-in Relationship or Marriage?

There is not much difference between a live-in relationship and marriage. When you are living with somebody, that person gains enormous power to affect your life in all kinds of ways, and you too gain that power. You cannot do justice to that responsibility if you are not a spiritually evolved person. Be very, very conscious of your personal space. It is sacred; not everybody must be allowed to enter it.

Mind Work Ends When True Realization Takes Hold

Realization is extremely powerful. You cannot realize and not act. It is impossible. You cannot realize and not act. Action follows realization. So if you come and say, “I realize, I understand but I cannot act,” then you are mistaken; you actually do not realize at all! The action after realization is not time-bound; it does not even have a time lag. It is instantaneous and spontaneous.
