The Enemy We Cannot Afford To Lose
The Enemy We Cannot Afford To Lose

Why ceasefires often spark grief, resentment, and identity crises instead of collective relief. The end of violence should feel like relief. Yet ceasefires often produce grief, anger, even resentment. Why? Because the enemy does more than threaten us, it gives identity, unity, and the promise of vindication. When conflict stops, many feel robbed of something unfinished. The real loss is not war itself, but the dependence on an enemy to know who we are.

Every summer India gets hotter, but have we asked who lit the fire? Petrol, plastic, cheap convenience, endless growth, we paid the price, but never the full cost. The real bill was shifted to rivers, forests, mountains, and the children yet to inherit this world. We consumed capital and called it profit. This is not just a climate crisis, but a crisis of desire. The bill has arrived. Will we open it?

Women’s reservation means little unless society first transforms the lives women actually inhabit. More seats for women promise progress, yet the structure beneath remains unchanged. Representation grows, but the same families, same control, and same limitations persist. A woman may enter Parliament yet remain bound in her personal life. Without changing the ground that shapes her identity and choices, reservation risks becoming a surface shift, not real freedom.

The conversation extends to team sports teaching ego-dissolution, broadening identity beyond self-interest, and addressing planetary crises through inner transformation. They examine how religion's core purpose—freedom from suffering—unites humanity despite different practices, and discuss practical solutions to environmental exploitation through proper pricing and intent.

India’s obsession with government jobs reveals deeper anxieties about status, security and social validation. The government job is the institutional expression of the conviction that life is something to be made comfortable rather than something to be engaged with fully. Private employment is treated as something marginal, not because the family has examined the evidence, but because the government job’s superiority has been absorbed as common sense across generations. This hunger is not merely about power. It is specific, personal, and rooted in the incompleteness that the ego is.

The governments that refuse to account for military emissions did not arrive from nowhere. They were elected, tolerated, and applauded by people running the same programme of exemption on a smaller scale: consume, expand, secure, do not look at the cost. Every accounting system reflects the priorities of the one doing the accounting. The money exists; the political will does not, because the political will is being consumed by the same appetite that is generating the emissions.

Nations go to war for the same reason individuals destroy their own relationships, and the instinct is to locate the source of that pain outside oneself. The resource explanation for the US-Iran confrontation is the most persistent alibi and the most easily dismantled. The question that does not get asked is simpler and more dangerous: who is the one fighting? The ego that requires enemies to sustain its own sense of coherence does not disappear when the missiles stop.

There is a particular kind of dishonesty that does not originate in malice. It originates in fear, specifically the fear of being seen as ignorant. The ego that cannot bear being ignorant is not unique to any culture. What India shares with neither tradition is the institutionalised permission not to know.

There has to be determination to go into the route of the swings, desires and urges, to be free and well. And it is quite possible that the right medication need not be a pill.

Nations often behave remarkably like insecure individuals. Every new weapon is the ego trying to insure itself against its own fragility. When the boundary feels violated, nations behave the way any organism does. On the collective level, it becomes nation against nation. The collective reacts rather than reflects. A scandal is not a new revelation. It is a long-overdue and grudging declaration of our inability to keep ignoring what was already there all along. The question, then, is not why the scandal surfaced, but how it remained hidden at all. And why something so obvious and axiomatic required loud exposure before it could be acknowledged. When power is held without inner clarity, it is put to the meanest and lowest kinds of use, usually away from public view. That is why it is not seen, and why delusion persists.
