It’s far easier to sit on a greatly decorated stage and talk about the virtues of Rudrākṣa, and what kind of water to drink, and why copper is useful; and all kinds of pseudo-scientific nonsense. But to really speak upon a Kabir or an Ashtavakra requires a tremendous understanding which does not come to everybody. If you are a spiritual teacher and you are saying you have not read any scripture, that raises questions on your love for the Truth.

गुरु को भी बाज़ार बना लिया

अगर मैं कोई माल बेच रहा हूँ, तो वही तो बेचूँगा जो आप ख़रीदना चाहते हो। गुरु जी वही करते हैं। आपको वही सुना देते हैं जो आप सुनना चाहते हो, बस थोड़े सोफ़िस्टिकेटेड तरीके से। तो ज़्यादातर जिसको आप स्पिरिचुअलिटी बोलते हो, वो सेंटिमेंटल कंसोलेशन होती है बस। थोड़ी देर के लिए आपको सुकून मिल जाएगा, पर आपकी ज़िंदगी में वास्तव में कुछ नहीं बदलेगा। अपनी कामना पूरी करने के लिए आप जहाँ भी जाओगे, वह बाज़ार ही होगा। गुरु को भी बाज़ार बना लिया, तो अब क्या बचा।

A Guru’s Helplessness

You can tell someone, “Kid, this is the path of destruction. Leave it!” But you cannot forcefully pick the kid up and take her away. You know something is not right for the other person, and yet you can’t help her from doing it. You can’t give up, you can’t get angry, and you can’t stop what is happening. Great powerlessness. That’s how a Teacher feels.

गुरु और शिष्य का रिश्ता

बेबाक और बिंदास, बेधड़क और बेख़ौफ़ — ये रिश्ता है शिष्य और गुरु का। हमारा मन अर्जुन-सा नहीं होता कि, "कुछ न हो तुम्हारे पास, अपनी सारी सेना भी दुर्योधन को दे दी, फिर भी हमें तो नेह तुमसे लगा है।" सच्चा शिष्य परम-स्वार्थी होता है; वह छोटी-मोटी चीज़ गुरु से माँगता ही नहीं है, वह कहता है, "तुम ही आओ, पूरे आओ।"

गुरु बाहर नहीं, तुम्हारे भीतर है

गुरु कोई बाहरी व्यक्ति नहीं होता; तुम जो ऊँचे से ऊँचे हो सकते हो, तुम्हारी उस अप्राप्त संभावना का नाम है — गुरु। गुरु के साथ रहने का अर्थ होता है — अपनी उच्चतम संभावना के साथ रहना। उसके साथ होने का मतलब होता है उसको समर्पित हो जाना। वो पीछे से आदेश देता रहता है और तुम काम कर रहे होते हो। गुरु का विचार नहीं किया जाता, जब गुरु साथ होता है तो समस्त विचारों में गुरुता आ जाती है। गुरु का विचार नहीं करो, गुरु द्वारा प्रेरित जीवन जियो।

Whom Does the Guru Help?

If you have not been benefitting from the Guru, either you are too full of yourself or you are not really devoted and putting in the right efforts. Ashtavakra puts it very simply: Even if Brahma, Vishnu, or Shiva are your teachers, yet if you cannot get rid of yourself, you will not benefit. Only somebody who has seen the total failure of his ways is so determined to get rid of suffering that he can sacrifice anything, anybody — only such a person, such a mind, can be helped by the Guru.

गुरु की पहचान क्या है?

गुरु वो जो तुम्हारी भलाई में सहायक हो सके। जिस गुरु के साथ रह करके मन के भ्रम न कट रहे हों, उसको तुरंत त्यागो। किसी 'व्यक्ति' के प्रति निष्ठा मत रखने लग जाना। लक्ष्य तो सच्चाई है; व्यक्ति को थोड़े ही पूजना है। ‘व्यक्ति’ गुरु नहीं होता; गुरु संदेशवाहक है। गुरु ऊँचे-से-ऊँचा साधन भी हो सकता है और गुरु स्वयं बहुत बड़ी ग़ुलामी भी बन सकता है। अधिकांशतः गुरु के नाम पर ग़ुलामी ही मिलती है। लगातार जाँचते चलो — बंधन कट रहे हैं कि नहीं; अंधेरा हट रहा है कि नहीं।

The moment you utter the word ‘Guru,’ the image of a sober, realized master sitting and teaching his students comes to your mind, but Guru is a continuity, taking different forms at different times. The Guru can appear in front of you even as a competitor, or somebody with whom you have a conflict, or even as a tempting person of the opposite gender. Do not try to predict his ways; the ways of divinity are unfathomable. In fact, if you ever come across a Guru in a very planned way, then rest assured — that Guru is not a Guru.

How Does The Guru Choose his Students?

Please — in the world of the guru, in the dimension of the guru, in the eyes of the guru, there are no walls or houses or doors at all. So he cannot throw you out. But in the world of the student, doors and houses and separations and barriers and walls do exist. So the student can ensure that there is a separation between him and the teacher.

गुरु कौन, गुरु का महत्त्व क्या?

शरीरी गुरु क्यों चाहिए? इसलिए नहीं कि परमात्मा पक्षपात करता है, इसलिए क्योंकि तुम पक्षपात करते हो। ऊपरवाले की ज़िद नहीं है कि गुरु कोई देही आदमी ही हो सकता है। ये तुम्हारी ज़िद है। तुम्हें शरीर से बड़ा मोह है, बड़ी आसक्ति है। तुम्हें शरीर से बड़ी आसक्ति है, तो फिर तुम सीखते भी किसी ऐसे से ही हो जो सशरीर हो। नहीं तो तुम सीख नहीं पाओगे।

सिख होने का विनम्र अनूठापन

सिख धर्म का मतलब ही यही है — जो कुछ भी उचित लगता है, फ़र्क नहीं पड़ता किसने कहा और कब कहा — मैं उसको सुनूँगा और उसके सामने सिर झुकाऊँगा। सिख होने का मतलब है कि मैं लगातार सीख रहा हूँ, मैं शिष्य हूँ। दुनिया में कोई धर्म नहीं कहता कि शिष्य बनो, हर धर्म अनुयायी चाहता है। सिख धर्म शिष्यत्व चाहता है। बहुत-बहुत अनूठा है — न तो अवतार है, न पैग़म्बर, सिर्फ़ गुरु ग्रन्थ साहिब है जो शाश्वत गुरु है।

The word for a Guru does not really exist in the English language. So, they have borrowed Guru itself, Guru. But they have borrowed the word Guru and rather misunderstood it and misapplied it.
