आचार्य प्रशांत: इस युग की सबसे बड़ी त्रासदी ये है कि गुरु भ्रष्ट है और इस युग की सबसे बड़ी त्रासदी ये है कि गुरु और व्यापारी और राजनेता इन तीनों में साँठ-गाँठ हो गयी है। ऐसा पहले कम हुआ था। धर्म और राजनीति तो अतीत में भी हुआ है…

सिख धर्म का मतलब ही यही है — जो कुछ भी उचित लगता है, फ़र्क नहीं पड़ता किसने कहा और कब कहा — मैं उसको सुनूँगा और उसके सामने सिर झुकाऊँगा। सिख होने का मतलब है कि मैं लगातार सीख रहा हूँ, मैं शिष्य हूँ। दुनिया में कोई धर्म नहीं कहता कि शिष्य बनो, हर धर्म अनुयायी चाहता है। सिख धर्म शिष्यत्व चाहता है। बहुत-बहुत अनूठा है — न तो अवतार है, न पैग़म्बर, सिर्फ़ गुरु ग्रन्थ साहिब है जो शाश्वत गुरु है।

गुरु कोई बाहरी व्यक्ति नहीं होता; तुम जो ऊँचे से ऊँचे हो सकते हो, तुम्हारी उस अप्राप्त संभावना का नाम है — गुरु। गुरु के साथ रहने का अर्थ होता है — अपनी उच्चतम संभावना के साथ रहना। उसके साथ होने का मतलब होता है उसको समर्पित हो जाना। वो पीछे से आदेश देता रहता है और तुम काम कर रहे होते हो। गुरु का विचार नहीं किया जाता, जब गुरु साथ होता है तो समस्त विचारों में गुरुता आ जाती है। गुरु का विचार नहीं करो, गुरु द्वारा प्रेरित जीवन जियो।

जो भीतर के अंधेरे को हटा सके, उसके लिए नाम दिया गया — गुरु। आपकी उच्चतम संभावना को जो अभिव्यक्ति देने में मदद कर सके, उसका नाम गुरु है। कुछ शब्दों का हल्का प्रयोग नहीं करना चाहिए; 'गुरु' उन शब्दों में सर्वोपरी है। जो एक से बढ़कर एक अंधविश्वास के विक्रेता हैं, उनको हमने गुरु का नाम दे दिया है — ये मत करिए। बहुत खोजें, जाँचें, परखें, परीक्षण करें, और जिज्ञासा की भावना को बहुत जल्दी अंधी आस्था में न बदलने दें। ‘गुरु’ शब्द बड़े वजन का है, हर किसी के साथ इस शब्द को मत जोड़ दीजिए।

It is not others that you have to be cautious of. You have to be cautious of that within you which gets influenced by others, which does not know others but gets influenced by others. It does not live in knowing. It lives in indoctrination. How to know the real master? See, who is treating your disease. How do you know a doctor? Not by his degrees but by his ability to treat you.

The principle of maya is founded on free choice. That's the very condition behind her existence, which is that, “I will disappear only when I choose to.” Grace is not something that happens coincidentally, randomly. Grace is a function of your own willingness. They say, “it may rain but you have to keep your umbrella aside.” The willingness to at least receive, be a recipient has to be there. Otherwise, you will remain dry and untouched.

बेबाक और बिंदास, बेधड़क और बेख़ौफ़ — ये रिश्ता है शिष्य और गुरु का। हमारा मन अर्जुन-सा नहीं होता कि, "कुछ न हो तुम्हारे पास, अपनी सारी सेना भी दुर्योधन को दे दी, फिर भी हमें तो नेह तुमसे लगा है।" सच्चा शिष्य परम-स्वार्थी होता है; वह छोटी-मोटी चीज़ गुरु से माँगता ही नहीं है, वह कहता है, "तुम ही आओ, पूरे आओ।"

अहं अगनि हिरदै जरै, गुरू सों चाहै मान। तिनका जम न्यौता दिया, हो हमरे मिहमान॥

आध्यात्मिकता का उद्देश्य व्यक्ति को बाहरी अधिकारों से आगे आंतरिक स्वतंत्रता की ओर ले जाना है। विज्ञान और संविधान अपने-अपने क्षेत्र में महत्वपूर्ण हैं, लेकिन आत्म-भ्रम, गलत चुनाव और अहंकार से मुक्ति का मार्ग आत्मज्ञान से खुलता है। सच्चा गुरु शिष्य को निर्भर नहीं, स्वतंत्र बनाता है। साथ ही, शिष्य का आचरण उसके गुरु और शिक्षा का प्रतिनिधित्व करता है, इसलिए उसे नकल नहीं, समझ और विवेक के साथ जीना चाहिए।

सच्चा गुरु या मित्र पूजा का विषय नहीं, बल्कि दर्पण होता है, जो बिना स्वार्थ हमारी वास्तविक स्थिति दिखाता है। आध्यात्मिक मार्ग पर अंधभक्ति नहीं, बल्कि प्रेम, कृतज्ञता और व्यक्तिगत ज़िम्मेदारी आवश्यक है। मुक्ति किसी गुरु के भरोसे नहीं मिलती; स्वयं को बदलने का साहस स्वयं जुटाना पड़ता है। गुरु का कार्य केवल सत्य का प्रतिबिंब दिखाना है, चलना साधक को ही होता है।

क्या सभी गुरु और ग्रंथ व्यर्थ हैं, या यह भी अहंकार का एक नया रूप है? इस संवाद में आचार्य प्रशांत बताते हैं कि सत्य का कोई निश्चित मार्ग नहीं, लेकिन इसका अर्थ यह नहीं कि गुरु और शास्त्रों का महत्व समाप्त हो जाता है। वे मौलिकता, कृतज्ञता और बौद्धिक ईमानदारी पर ज़ोर देते हुए समझाते हैं कि जिसने जहाँ से सीखा है, उसका स्वीकार आवश्यक है। साथ ही चेतावनी देते हैं कि "मैं स्वयं ही पर्याप्त हूँ" का विचार भी अहंकार का सूक्ष्म खेल बन सकता है।

अर्जुन की विशेषता उनकी पूर्णता में नहीं, बल्कि सत्य के प्रति उनकी ईमानदारी में थी। उन्होंने अपने भ्रम, भय, मोह और संदेहों को छिपाया नहीं, बल्कि उनका सामना किया। दूसरों की तरह किसी पक्ष से चिपकने के बजाय उन्होंने निष्पक्ष होकर देखने की इच्छा दिखाई और अपने से ऊँची बुद्धि के मार्गदर्शन को स्वीकार किया। वास्तविक श्रेष्ठता त्रुटिहीन होने में नहीं, बल्कि सीखने, बदलने और सत्य के लिए अपने अहंकार से ऊपर उठने की क्षमता में है।

प्रश्नकर्ता: आचार्य जी, जैसे मैं पहले ओशो जी और जिद्दू कृष्णमूर्ति जी के रंग में रंगा हुआ था और अब आपके रंग में रंगा हुआ हूँ। मुझे ये समझ नहीं आता कि यह मेरी जिज्ञासा मात्र है, प्रेम है या पागलपन?

It’s far easier to sit on a greatly decorated stage and talk about the virtues of Rudrākṣa, and what kind of water to drink, and why copper is useful; and all kinds of pseudo-scientific nonsense. But to really speak upon a Kabir or an Ashtavakra requires a tremendous understanding which does not come to everybody. If you are a spiritual teacher and you are saying you have not read any scripture, that raises questions on your love for the Truth.

अगर मैं कोई माल बेच रहा हूँ, तो वही तो बेचूँगा जो आप ख़रीदना चाहते हो। गुरु जी वही करते हैं। आपको वही सुना देते हैं जो आप सुनना चाहते हो, बस थोड़े सोफ़िस्टिकेटेड तरीके से। तो ज़्यादातर जिसको आप स्पिरिचुअलिटी बोलते हो, वो सेंटिमेंटल कंसोलेशन होती है बस। थोड़ी देर के लिए आपको सुकून मिल जाएगा, पर आपकी ज़िंदगी में वास्तव में कुछ नहीं बदलेगा। अपनी कामना पूरी करने के लिए आप जहाँ भी जाओगे, वह बाज़ार ही होगा। गुरु को भी बाज़ार बना लिया, तो अब क्या बचा।

You can tell someone, “Kid, this is the path of destruction. Leave it!” But you cannot forcefully pick the kid up and take her away. You know something is not right for the other person, and yet you can’t help her from doing it. You can’t give up, you can’t get angry, and you can’t stop what is happening. Great powerlessness. That’s how a Teacher feels.

गुरु ही देव है, माने ऊँचा देव को बाद में मानना, पहले आत्मा को ऊँचा मानो। बाहर कुछ भी ऊँचा नहीं है, जो ऊँची से ऊँची चीज़ हो सकती है, वो तुम्हारे ही भीतर मौजूद है। कितनी आत्मसम्मान की बात है ना ये। पर हम अपने ही प्रति अपमान से भरे हुए लोग हैं। तो हमें लगता है कि वहाँ पर कुछ है और हमें जाकर लोट जाना है, नेताजी हो, कोई हो, लौट जाना है। हीन भावना, अपना ही अपमान।

If you have not been benefitting from the Guru, either you are too full of yourself or you are not really devoted and putting in the right efforts. Ashtavakra puts it very simply: Even if Brahma, Vishnu, or Shiva are your teachers, yet if you cannot get rid of yourself, you will not benefit. Only somebody who has seen the total failure of his ways is so determined to get rid of suffering that he can sacrifice anything, anybody — only such a person, such a mind, can be helped by the Guru.

गुरु वो जो तुम्हारी भलाई में सहायक हो सके। जिस गुरु के साथ रह करके मन के भ्रम न कट रहे हों, उसको तुरंत त्यागो। किसी 'व्यक्ति' के प्रति निष्ठा मत रखने लग जाना। लक्ष्य तो सच्चाई है; व्यक्ति को थोड़े ही पूजना है। ‘व्यक्ति’ गुरु नहीं होता; गुरु संदेशवाहक है। गुरु ऊँचे-से-ऊँचा साधन भी हो सकता है और गुरु स्वयं बहुत बड़ी ग़ुलामी भी बन सकता है। अधिकांशतः गुरु के नाम पर ग़ुलामी ही मिलती है। लगातार जाँचते चलो — बंधन कट रहे हैं कि नहीं; अंधेरा हट रहा है कि नहीं।

The moment you utter the word ‘Guru,’ the image of a sober, realized master sitting and teaching his students comes to your mind, but Guru is a continuity, taking different forms at different times. The Guru can appear in front of you even as a competitor, or somebody with whom you have a conflict, or even as a tempting person of the opposite gender. Do not try to predict his ways; the ways of divinity are unfathomable. In fact, if you ever come across a Guru in a very planned way, then rest assured — that Guru is not a Guru.

Please — in the world of the guru, in the dimension of the guru, in the eyes of the guru, there are no walls or houses or doors at all. So he cannot throw you out. But in the world of the student, doors and houses and separations and barriers and walls do exist. So the student can ensure that there is a separation between him and the teacher.

शरीरी गुरु क्यों चाहिए? इसलिए नहीं कि परमात्मा पक्षपात करता है, इसलिए क्योंकि तुम पक्षपात करते हो। ऊपरवाले की ज़िद नहीं है कि गुरु कोई देही आदमी ही हो सकता है। ये तुम्हारी ज़िद है। तुम्हें शरीर से बड़ा मोह है, बड़ी आसक्ति है। तुम्हें शरीर से बड़ी आसक्ति है, तो फिर तुम सीखते भी किसी ऐसे से ही हो जो सशरीर हो। नहीं तो तुम सीख नहीं पाओगे।

Liquor consumption or flesh consumption or other kinds of unwise gratifications of the body, merely increase the obstacles that one faces. So, therefore, those kinds of things must not be practiced — even if it is observed that a realized man is practicing them.

गुरु का परिचय उसका प्रभाव है; गुरु कोई पदवी नहीं है। गुरु वो हैं, जिनके होने से शांति, समझ और रोशनी आती हो। बुद्धि का भरपूर प्रयोग करो। किसी भी बात को बस आँख मूँदकर, हाथ जोड़कर स्वीकार मत कर लो कि, "गुरु जी कह रहे हैं तो ठीक ही होगी।" खासतौर पर उन जगहों से बचना जहाँ विज्ञान-विरुद्ध और अंधविश्वास से भरी हुई बातें की जाती हों। जहाँ डर हटने लगे, जहाँ मन से ईर्ष्या, संदेह, तमाम तरह की बेचैनियाँ हटने लगें, समझ लेना वह जगह तुम्हारे लिए ठीक है।

The word for a Guru does not really exist in the English language. So, they have borrowed Guru itself, Guru. But they have borrowed the word Guru and rather misunderstood it and misapplied it. So, anybody who seems to be an expert at anything, can be justifiably called a Guru in the English language. Now that's not the proper usage in spirituality or in Sanskrit.

You say that you have met many enlightened masters. If Enlightenment is what it is as traditionally asserted, then even one should have been sufficient. And even meeting one is considered a rare occurrence. And here you are, having met many and still confused.
