Free to befriend and free to offend || Acharya Prashant (2015)

Question: Sir, in the morning, we were listening to Kabir. So, there was one of the doha which said, “Na kahu se dosti, na kahu se bair” (Neither friendship nor enmity with anyone at all). Usually, when you listen to it, it feels similar to what you also say that a Real man would be dishonest. I probably felt that this is what is being said. He would not be the same always.

Acharya Prashant: His friendship would be Real. It would not be a carry-over from the past. Similarly, if he offers resistance or resentment to something, even that would be Real; born by the fact of the moment, not carried ahead as a tradition.

Why do you oppose people of that particular country? Because traditionally they are our rivals – his resentment would not be like this. Yes, he would support a few things; yes, he would oppose a few things. To somebody, he would say kind words; to somebody, he might say harsh words. But, all of that would be as per the situation, as per the realization, not as per tradition. That is what is meant when Kabir says, “Na kaahu se dosti, na kaahu se bair”.

That doesn’t mean that Kabir is incapable of friendliness; and of course, it doesn’t mean that he is incapable of resistance. Kabir, in fact, resisted like nobody else! Sitting in the centre of orthodoxy, he resisted stale, harmful, dogmatic beliefs coming from all communities. He made enemies from all sides, he did not discriminate.

And when you are prepared to make an enemy of everybody, it only means that you have found the Real friend. When you are in company of your Real friend then you can easily afford to have as many enemies as the enemies would like.

And Kabir was truly a friend; you cannot find a better friend than Kabir. He says, “Na kaahu se dosti,” he says, “*No friendliness with anybody,*” but you cannot get a better friend than Kabir. Provided, you are not obstinately sticking to your beliefs and concepts, then Kabir cannot be a friend, he is a destroyer.

It is such a strange thing: when you try to be friends, then you become the worst enemy possible. A wise man has said that “Husband and wives are intimate enemies”. A wife finds no worse enemy than the husband and it is a fact, ask the husband. He is so henpecked, always troubled. He might have to act nice, out of social pretence, but wherever there is an obligation to be nice, there is an internal violence. And sooner than later that violence will erupt. But, when you really have no obligation to be siding with somebody, to be good to somebody, then you can be really good.

Look at your festivals, it is almost mandatory to act as if you are enjoying and that is why nobody ever enjoys any festival. What kind of stupidity is this? — ‘A pre-appointed day comes and you are supposed to feel blissful’. Is this the way Bliss descents? On ready-made dates! But when you can get past the tyranny of the calendar, then you really know Joy.

At present, our celebrations are all nothing but dictatorship of the calendar . The anniversary comes and it dictates; the birthday comes and that is the authority of the calendar; the new year comes; the religious festivals come; and what then you get is just inner turmoil, boredom and suffering. Kabir says — he will have none of that and then he has Real religiousness, Real celebration, continuous!

A Diwali or any other festival would mean nothing to Kabir. How can he be especially festive on that day? How? Because that would only mean that on the other days there was something missing in his devotion, his religiousness, his festivity.

When he has been at the climax of his festivity through-out, then what is the point in celebrating one particular day or night? He has always been at the maxima; he never came down. “Shoonya shikhar par anhad baaje ji” – He never descended from the peak, how is he going to climb again? And he doesn’t want to pretend to climb.

You look at this contradiction: The ones who are there already, are just there; and the ones who are not there, do not even want to reach there. They just want to pretend that they are climbing.

What do you think — you really experience some religious bliss on particular days? Does that happen? You just pretend! Not only are you not there, you are actually not even moving towards being there. Anybody, who ever really felt anything important on his/her birthday? Yes, superficially you may feel so many things, and there are all these trivial excitements. But, does that day really bring anything substantial to you?

Ask Kabir, he himself would give no importance to dates, or to people, or to anything else, because he has given importance to the Really Important . Know, “Na kaahu se dosti, na kaahu se bair”.

Listener 1: Sir, there are days celebrated such as environment day, Hindi divas (day). Are they any good or not? Means on a particular day you are creating awareness that celebrate Hindi divas, speaking Hindi…

Speaker: They can be celebrated like you celebrate an A.I.D.S. awareness day. Because ‘awareness’ is missing, so on this particular day, we will try to educate people about it. But, there this realization must be there, that this day is coming only because awareness is missing.

You know you need to celebrate a Hindi pakhwada (fortnight) – why do you need to celebrate that? Because, this generation is losing touch with that language, right? That realization must be there then, that it is not out of some great attainment that this day is being celebrated. This day is being celebrated as a warning; it is not a celebration at all! It is some kind of a notice that on this particular day we will sensitize ourselves to the dangers of what we are doing and how we are.

You can have a climate change day , probably there already is. You are not celebrating climate change that day, are you? That day is being used to see how ignorant we are, how deep in suffering we are and how we have plunged ourselves in misery out of our own selfishness. That is the way days can have some relevance and significance and utility. But, that is the only way.

You cannot have a day for celebration; you can have a day to issue warnings, notices. You can have a particular day when you are going to be operated on the surgeon’s table, but you cannot have a day for health.

You can have an operation day, but you cannot have a health day.

What Sanatan Dharma Is Not
Sanatan Dharma is not about following traditions in the name of Dharma. It is about constantly moving towards that which will take you beyond your mind: the Sanatan. All our beliefs and rituals might be religious, but they are not Sanatan because they are just mind stuff. Since both Sanatan Dharma and Vedanta discard mind stuff as trivial, one cannot be a Sanatani if one is not a Vedanti.
What Is Rest?
Rest is to realize that whatever you are doing is ultimately not going to benefit you in terms of result. Rest is to not to hope for a result, but to be already there and because you are already there, so the activity is happening. Now the activity is a game, a pass time, just for fun. You can indulge yourself or you can change the activity. The activity doesn’t really mean much.
Big Fat Salary, Or Stable Job?
Work is the most important component of your life, it will take away all your time. You cannot approach work with these considerations: salary & stability. Discover your calling, not just a job, a calling. What is it that calls you as a lover? What kind of work that would be which you are ready to do even without being paid? If that work can be your life, then life is beautiful.
Why Do Partners Cheat?
Marriage founded on the body alone is bound to suffer from cheating, as one body can never satisfy anyone. Your association with the other person should be based on love, friendship, and inner fulfillment, not the body. If you are physical and bodily, no loyalty is possible. Loyalty is fundamentally spiritual.
Can Nature Worship in the Vedas Hold Deeper Meaning Today?
The higher meaning is desirelessness. You cannot worship something with a view to obtain favors from it. That's exploitation. That's consumption. So the real kind of nature worship that we talk of, let's say, in durga saptshati, that's different. That's where the relationship is not of bhog.
Acharya Prashant Interviewed By Kip Andersen (#Christspiracy) || Religion And Animals
Now, how does man relate with the world? How does man know what to do, how to approach, how to touch, how to live, how to eat, how to talk, how to connect? That, to me, is the essence of religion. Man’s relationship with himself and the world. That is religion, and that is also the essence of all organized religions.
Does Jealousy Arise from Ego?
Jealousy comes from dependency. The person who is not dependent cannot feel jealousy. The one who is his own master has no reason to be jealous. To be jealous implies that someone has been accepted as a master, and there is a desire for that master to stay with them. If the master goes elsewhere, a certain pain arises, and this pain is what is called jealousy.
Why Do You Get Hurt So Easily?
When you feel inferior, even a harmless touch can hurt you. No one can hurt you without your consent. It has nothing to do with the intention of the other person; it has much more to do with your self-concept. The deeper you go into yourself, the more you are devoted and surrendered to the Truth, the less significant this tendency to get hurt will become.
How Do I Retain This Beautiful Silence?
Silence is not just the absence of sound. Sound has its utility. Let there be a lot of sound and yet let there be silence and that silence is not cultivated through discipline. It is just a matter of the mind being aware of anything outside it but also of itself.
How to Overcome Sadness?
Why do you have so much personal time? How are you available to grief? Your consciousness is too self-centered; it needs expansion. Even as you grieve over one death, billions of goats, rabbits, lambs, fish, cows, and chickens are slaughtered. Commit your time. Dedicate it to a higher purpose. We attach great sanctity to our personal lives. Give it up!
Why Do We Celebrate Kumbh?
The story, the myth, is elaborate, but one word that firmly dictates the narrative of the Kumbh saga is immortality. Immortality is to live deeply, not necessarily long. It is to go to one’s deepest desire, fulfill it, and extinguish it forever. Another Kumbh beckons us. Can we go beyond the ritualistic dip and honestly observe life as it is, within and around us?
Are All the Interesting People Found in Hell?
No! They are not interesting people; they are sick people. It’s just that the very definition of the word 'interesting' has become distorted to their advantage. People in hell are as interesting as a stinking pile of trash is.
Can Multiple Sexual Partners Fulfill You?
All your relationships are deeply your attempts to fill an inner void. Whether you relate sexually to one person or many — will sex give you what you truly want? The body is a shallow means to attain that which your consciousness craves. There are beautiful ways of relating to men and women; relate to them in higher ways.
The Means Is as Important as the End
And then there are those who actually really practically want liberation. Those who really and practically want liberation, find out the means to be liberated. The Guru is the means. Nanak sahab says, “Now that you know so much about God, the absolute, you must also know how the absolute is to be reached.”
The Making of a Rare Vivekananda: The Role of Ramakrishna
Swami Vivekananda was an ordinary man—Narendra, and he too had his ordinary pursuits. It was the magical touch of Paramhans, that turned him into Vivekananda. And he wasn't too eager either. Many times, he ran away from Ramakrishna. It is a gigantic task, it doesn't just happen on its own. If you leave the youth to how they are, it is not liberation that would happen.
Are You Against Marriage?
We are all born married to our desires, despair, and desperation. A woman or a man is not responsible for making us feel bonded or suffocated. It is the feeling of attachment, loneliness, and dependency that troubles you. Get rid of these, and then, if someone comes into your life, it’s alright. If you feel like marrying them, do it; if not, don’t.
Death: Destiny, Karma, And Divine Intervention
There is no divine intervention. There is prakriti. Prakriti does not brook any intervention from any quarter. Just happened. If you look for a reason, there isn’t any. Randomness is the reason.
J. Krishnamurti's 'The Observer Is the Observed' Explained by Acharya Prashant
'The observer is the observed; an honest observation dissolves them both.' Or, 'The observer is the observed, and both are false.' We lay a lot of emphasis on the world, assuming it to be the Truth. If the world is an entity independent of everything, then it has to be the Truth, right? Truth is that which is independent of everything.
Rapid Fire Round with Acharya Prashant
Man and woman, classically, both are just Prakriti. So, both come under the umbrella name of woman which is the human state. In some sense, all of us are women. You are a woman in just the biological sense; I too am a woman in the mental sense. So, the word woman describes entire mankind; you could say, “Womankind.”
How To Get Rid Of Bad Habits?
Don’t live out of habit, live out of wakefulness. Your action must not be habituated action; your thought must not be a pattern-based thought. Your thought, your action must come out of your understanding. Don’t depend on habit.
Spirituality Is Neither Culture Nor Tradition
Spirituality is neither a tradition nor a culture. Spirituality is not at all about following something or somebody. When it is said that you must follow the Guru, the Guru is the Truth, not a person not a man. Spirituality would never say, “Follow the words of a man.” Spirituality says, “Let the mind follow the Center, the Truth or you may call it the Heart or God.”
Should You Quit Social Media?
We go to social media and use it according to our tendencies. If someone tends to seek self-worth in the eyes of others, that tendency will manifest in some form or another. The same social media can also be a vehicle for precious knowledge. So, observe the tendency and ask yourself: "Am I truly gaining self-worth? Or am I just becoming more fearful or more addicted?"
How to Meet Others’ Expectations?
People expect because they feel that something is missing from life. They expect from the world, from others, from situations, from luck, and also from themselves. The root of all these expectations is an inner feeling of lack of fulfillment. Meeting others’ expectations is a false treatment where you allow illusions to persist. If you love your dear ones, bring the Truth closer to them.
Do Vegan Athletes Really Avoid Animal Cruelty?
If you can deal with human ignorance only then there is the chance, we will be more friendly, more compassionate towards animals. Otherwise, a sectoral approach, a fragmented approach will at most make you feel good about yourself. But in the bigger picture, it does no favor to the animals or to the environment.
Western vs Indian Philosophy: Who Holds the Key to True Freedom?
They don't contradict each other. You see, what the existentialists including Sartre were saying was that the nature of the human being is such that even if you want to suppress or disown consciousness, you will not succeed. So, man is condemned to be free.
