Ok got it. I guess I need to apologize for the sentence phrasing that changed the whole meaning. What I actually meant was, Earlier, I sometimes became more disciplined when my work was closely monitored and more relaxed when it wasn't. Later in life, while reflecting on this pattern, I began questioning whether my discipline came from inner responsibility or external pressure.
