That crossed-fingers habit is worth a second look. It quietly assumes the fix is a better test, a more careful check, one more generation of evidence, when the actual gap Cecilia's story points to is different: not that her working was faulty, but that Russell's authority was allowed to sit between her and her own data for a while. The question isn't whether your reasoning is careful enough. It's whether, right now, there's a Russell sitting between you and something you've already seen clearly.
