I read this online: Even social reformer like Raja Rammohan Roy used to prove that mainstream Vedic text did not mandate or support the practice of Sati (widow burning) From the Rigveda's funeral hymn 10.18.7 — Calls on women who are not widows (whose husbands are living) to come forward, anointed with ghee, as part of the funeral ritual — essentially separating the auspicious, married women from the widow's fate. 10.18.8 — Addressed directly to the widow: she is told to rise from beside her dead husband and return to the world of the living (Wisdom Library) , since the man she lay beside is now lifeless. It affirms that her role as wife has ended and calls her back into the world. But Orthodox pundits, defenders of the practice, drawing on a corrupted reading (substituting "agne" for "agre," changing "world of the living" into an instruction to enter the fire), argued the opposite.
