Description

Acharya Prashant explains that the character Howard Roark from 'The Fountainhead' is conceptualized as an awakened being, free from social conditioning and internal physical tendencies. Because Roark is already pure, he can spontaneously act and trust his instincts. In contrast, most people are more like the character Peter Keating, filled with illusions, beliefs, and social influences that they mistakenly call truth. Therefore, while Roark's job is to construct and execute his plans, the common person's job is to deconstruct and demolish their own botched-up mental sketches and false certainties. One must not take the same liberties as Roark until one has undergone the tedious process of self-purification and self-knowledge. Acharya Prashant further distinguishes between 'labor' and 'real work'. Labor is the effort expended to satisfy the body's needs and physical appetites, which even animals perform. Real work is that which is done to satisfy the consciousness or the soul. He points out that many people who appear to be high achievers are actually just laboring harder than animals to fuel their ambitions and consumption. The purpose of technological progress should be to minimize labor, thereby freeing up time and resources for real work. One must evaluate whether their efforts are merely labor for the sake of the body or true work that brings contentment to the consciousness.
