Description

Acharya Prashant explains that 'moh' (attachment/delusion) means magic. It is as if someone has put a veil over your consciousness and intellect. 'Maya' (illusion), traditionally, refers to external things. When everything outside appears hazy, it is called 'maya'. The fogging of the mind from within is 'moh'. 'Moh' is an internal intoxication, a state of delusion, an unconscious internal state. It is a charm, a delusion, an enchantment, as if the mind has become helpless. When you say someone is 'mohit' (deluded), it means they are deluded, their mind is not working, and they don't understand anything. 'Moh' means a veil has fallen over the mind, and consciousness has become intoxicated. It's a form of hypnosis or magic. The phrase 'moh-maya' implies that because a fog has spread within ('moh'), nothing outside is seen clearly ('maya'). Similarly, in 'moh-mamta' (attachment and affection), 'moh' comes before 'mamta'. 'Mamta' (possessiveness) comes only after 'moh'. 'Mamta' means to consider an external thing as one's own, to say 'mam' (mine). The initial problem is 'moh'. Without being deluded, 'mamta' is not possible. Without being deranged or mad, 'mamta' cannot arise. 'Mamta' means the foolishness of considering something that is not yours as your own. Nothing in this world is yours, not even your body ('mam-deh'). 'Moh' does not mean attachment; it means delusion, magic, or black magic. When you find someone talking incoherently, the word for them is 'mohit' (deluded), meaning they are completely mad, their mind is completely deranged. Shri Krishna is called 'Mohan' (the charmer) because he cuts through ordinary delusion. 'Moh' means someone has cast a spell on you. Shri Krishna is the one whose magic is the antidote to all other magic. The world charms you in small ways, casting a spell on you. Shri Krishna casts a bigger spell that cuts through all worldly spells. That is why he is called 'Mohan', the charmer.
