Description

Acharya Prashant explains that there are two distinct kinds of flows that govern a person's life: the flow of convention and the flow of the essential. The flow of convention, which he also calls destiny or the accidental flow, consists of everything given to us from the outside, such as our gender, religion, nationality, and even our thoughts and beliefs. This flow is incredibly powerful and carries the vast majority of people along with it, making their lives a series of random, situational events. He illustrates this with an example from his college days, where students were expected to show loyalty to a randomly assigned hostel, showing how even the most intelligent people are often toyed with by accidental circumstances. In contrast, the essential flow represents what a person truly is, which is not given by anyone else. While the accidental flow of conditioning is strong, Acharya Prashant asserts that the essential flow, or intelligence, is far more powerful. He describes the essential as a faint call that becomes a roar when one moves closer to it. Being in this flow liberates an individual from the burden of destiny and social obligations. It allows one to no longer be afraid of death or the future, as the individual is rooted in their natural state of being. Acharya Prashant concludes by explaining that once a person is aligned with the essential, destiny becomes a plaything rather than a monster. He uses the story of a wise man with a bag to show that one must first be able to put down the load of destiny to be free from it. Once this freedom is attained, one can pick the bag up again and dance with it, enjoying all accidental situations and circumstances without fear. Without the essential, life remains a source of tension and worry; with it, one remains unharmed and alright regardless of what tomorrow brings.
