Description

Acharya Prashant addresses a question about why he speaks slowly, unlike many motivational speakers who speak quickly and with enthusiasm. He explains that the purpose of speaking is not always to convey a message; sometimes, it is to conceal something. When a speaker talks rapidly, the listener is deprived of the opportunity to ponder and reflect on the words. This, he suggests, might be the speaker's intention, especially if their words lack substance. Such speakers, he posits, are often internally scared and insecure, fearing they will lose the audience's attention if they pause. They create a spectacle with fast speech and gestures to cover the lack of depth in their content. In contrast, Acharya Prashant states that he has no such fear. He can pause, confident that a genuine listener will wait, as he knows the value of his words. He clarifies that he has consciously slowed his pace for the listener's benefit, allowing them time to absorb each word and let it settle into their consciousness. These pauses also provide space for any internal reactions or questions to arise within the listener. His aim is to enhance understanding, not to impress or quickly "sell" a shallow idea, unlike a salesman who rushes a deal. The way a person speaks, he notes, reveals their true intention towards the listener. He observes that the questioner has likely been exposed only to motivational speakers in the name of knowledge and has probably never listened to truly deep individuals like Jiddu Krishnamurti, Osho, or Nisargadatta Maharaj, who also spoke with deliberate pauses. He asserts that motivation is a shallow concept, unrelated to genuine knowledge and understanding. He compares the fast delivery of motivational speakers to cheap, fast-paced movies that use continuous action to prevent the audience from noticing the illogical plot. Their compulsion to speak quickly stems from the fear that if the listener questions their childish content, they will have no answers. This is why, he concludes, most motivational speakers avoid putting their words in writing, as a written text would expose the numerous flaws in their arguments.
