Description

Acharya Prashant addresses a questioner's fear of being overpowered by Maya (illusion) despite understanding his own tendencies. The speaker explains that the common advice to simply be a witness to all the roles one plays in life is flawed. He argues against the idea of treating all roles as mere acting while remaining detached, stating that one cannot choose a foul character, like a butcher, and then claim to be a detached witness. This, he says, is an escape and dishonesty. Instead, Acharya Prashant offers a different perspective. He uses the metaphor, "the world is indeed a stage," but emphasizes the importance of choosing your roles wisely. He says that you cannot just pick any random character. The right character is one in which you can completely immerse yourself, get lost with joy, and have no desire to come out of it for 24 hours. This total immersion in the right action is what he defines as true witnessing. He gives the example of an actress who refuses to play a character that is regressive or exploitative, as it sends the wrong message to society. Similarly, one must choose the right work and the right life, a life you can dive into. This act of diving in is witnessing. He advises the questioner to choose a new, better role for himself, a character so engaging and full of flavor that he will not want to revert to the old one. He suggests that the questioner's current role as a husband is just one character, and it's time to choose a new one, like a 'husband-guru,' which is a different character altogether. This new role should be so fulfilling that the old one is forgotten. He concludes by advising a young woman on her birthday, saying, "You are not 21. You were never born." He explains this as an antidote to the "venom" of celebrating birthdays, which reinforces the idea of being born and thus subject to death. The fundamental truth is that you are unborn, and realizing this is the way to overcome the curse of birth and death.
