Description

Acharya Prashant responds to a question about the perceived distance between one's own life and the life of the 'wise one' as described by Shri Krishna in the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita. He explains that the bridge to cross this distance is the humble realization that one is not living wisely. The core issue, he states, is our false and misplaced self-confidence, which is at the root of all our troubles. People operate under the assumption that they are smart and wise, always choosing what appears to be the best option within their own frame of reference. Even the most wretched person, at the moment of making a decision, believes they are acting correctly and wisely. The speaker points out that we never deliberately choose a suboptimal or wrong option; we always select what seems best to us at that moment. The great revolution in one's life begins with the humble realization that one has not been deciding correctly. He identifies the decision-maker as the ego, our concept of who we are, describing it as a defective machine, a fraudster, and a usurper on a throne that belongs to someone else. Since the ego is both the doer and the assessor of its actions, its judgments are always rigged and favorable, preventing any real change. To bring about this revolution, the ego must be challenged and hurt. When we are confronted with the standards of great ones like the Buddha or Shri Krishna, we are forced to confess how wrong we have been. Their proximity, through scriptures or life stories, serves as a necessary and beneficial insult to our ego, revealing what we truly are, as opposed to the heroes we imagine ourselves to be. The speaker implores the listener to actively compare themselves to these great figures, because before the ego can die, it must be hurt. If one keeps comforting and pampering the ego, it will never die.
