Description

Acharya Prashant addresses the question of why Indians are so obsessed with lavish weddings. He explains that this phenomenon should not be surprising, as a wedding is the ultimate celebration of a subjugated consciousness. He defines this as a consciousness that is enslaved to the body. We are people of consciousness, but our consciousness is subjugated to the body, which is our fundamental condition. The body's ultimate desires are to have pleasure and to avoid death, which means seeking continuity. The institution of marriage is designed to ensure these two things: a continuous supply of sexual pleasure, emotional and financial security, and continuity through reproduction. Since we are body-centric people, the wedding becomes the biggest festival of the body. We are like animals, but we pretend to be higher beings living for nobler causes. This pretense is why we don't openly declare that we live for the body, as it would be a thing of shame, especially social shame. We are slaves to both the body and society. The speaker contrasts this with what a more conscious society would celebrate, such as overcoming physical limitations, intellectual achievements like solving a difficult math problem or writing a book, or rising above animalistic tendencies. Instead, we celebrate the most animalistic aspects of our lives. The speaker finds it obscene that a man and woman coming together for sex is celebrated with such grandeur, calling it vulgar. He further links this obsession to social evils. The entire wedding industry, including cosmetics, jewelry, and event management, thrives on this body-centric celebration. He points out that the huge expenses incurred, often including dowry, are directly related to female infanticide and foeticide. The speaker asserts that anyone who genuinely enjoys being at a wedding is a dangerous person to be around, as it reveals their vulgar, animalistic nature. The celebration of a wedding is a celebration of the body, and because we are fundamentally bodily people, we go to extreme lengths to celebrate it.
