He points out that expecting the Taliban to change is futile because the demand for change is being placed on the aggressor, which is where it can never come from. The cost of not standing up, he argues, is far greater than the cost of resisting, making resistance not just advisable but existentially necessary. Drawing a contrast between Afghanistan and Iran, he observes that Iranian women have repeatedly participated in their own liberation, from opposing the Shah to the Woman Life Freedom movement, which is precisely why change there is more probable. Afghan women, by contrast, have been tossed between periods of relative freedom and extreme oppression without building a sustained culture of self-assertion.
