Description

Acharya Prashant responds to a question about whether technology, which is causing so much destruction, should be stopped. He begins by asking what other choice humanity has. He presents two options: either become extinct in the next 40 years or change our ways. He clarifies that there are only these two choices. The speaker then addresses the use of technology, like the microphone he is using, in the very session discussing this topic. He explains that this technology is being used precisely to convey the message that technology should be used less. If the people in the audience did not need to hear this, he would not need the microphone. He emphasizes that the audience needs to understand how much harm technology is causing, otherwise they will be finished in their youth. He uses an analogy to illustrate his point: when a person is shot, the bullet pierces the body. A doctor then comes with surgical tools, which is also a form of technology, and also cuts the body. One would not argue that the doctor is doing the same thing as the bullet. The doctor has to cut the body because there is a bullet inside. Similarly, he is using technology to address the 'bullet' of destructive technology that is already harming humanity. Acharya Prashant further elaborates that the dream of every emerging nation is to achieve the same level of consumption as developed countries like America. However, to sustain such a lifestyle for everyone, we would need ten or twelve Earths, as our planet does not have enough resources. He questions the necessity of this level of consumption, pointing to the environmental cost of things like air conditioning, fossil fuels, and unnecessary air travel. He highlights that our greed, not our need, is what is causing destruction. For instance, he asks if a family really needs four cars or if it's just to impress the neighbors. He also points out that a significant portion of data services is used for frivolous activities like social media and downloading pornography, which has a massive energy footprint due to server farms that require immense cooling, contributing to global warming. He concludes by stating that the time has come for humanity to exercise discretion (vivek) and define its limits. The Earth can provide for everyone's basic needs, but not for everyone's greed. It is our greed and wrong conduct that are destroying the planet.
