Description

Acharya Prashant addresses the question of whether spiritual life and practical life are separate. He begins by stating that life is one, and the question of similarity or dissimilarity only arises when two different things are considered. The very act of dividing life into 'spiritual' and 'practical' is the first mistake. He questions how these two can be separate. If they are, then a practical life would be devoid of spirituality, making it lifeless, soulless, and dry. Conversely, a spiritual life that does not manifest in one's behavior is mere hypocrisy and idealism. The speaker emphasizes that this compartmentalization is a fundamental error. He explains that even the most mundane practical tasks, such as picking up a piece of paper or brushing one's teeth, must have a spiritual basis. For example, one brushes their teeth so that a toothache does not distract the mind from the ultimate truth, referred to as 'Ram'. Therefore, every action, even the smallest one, should be inspired by spirituality. He criticizes the common practice of allotting specific times for spiritual activities while living the rest of the day unspiritually, comparing it to having a separate room for God and a separate room for worldly affairs. He further points out that the person one is during a spiritual retreat is often different from the person they are in their daily life, which is another form of this flawed separation. Spirituality is not a part of life but its very foundation. It is not about renouncing the world but about living the most beautiful and highest possible life within the world. Spirituality is the art of living the right life. The first step is to constantly examine the basis of every action, asking whether it stems from truth or from tendencies like greed, fear, and restlessness. This self-inquiry is the art of living a spiritual life.
