Description

Acharya Prashant addresses the issue of having expectations from others, which the questioner calls a "disease." He advises not to get rid of expectations but to amplify them to their peak. The solution is to have the highest possible expectation, but direct it towards oneself, not others. Expecting from others leads to dependency and uncertainty, as one cannot be sure if they will fulfill it. This dependency is a source of suffering. Instead, one should have expectations from oneself. If one must have expectations, which is akin to being a beggar with an outstretched hand, then one should not ask for small things but for the greatest thing possible—the Supreme. The expectation should be to rise above the worldly ground level. Using the analogy of a rocket, he explains that just as a rocket flies up leaving the ground behind, one should aim to rise above worldly entanglements, which will remain where they are. The swan, he says, will fly away alone. The speaker explains that people have expectations because they want to feel good when they are fulfilled. A small expectation met brings a little pleasure, so a great expectation fulfilled will bring great pleasure. However, having great expectations from others is risky, as it can lead to a great shock if unmet. Therefore, it is best to have the highest expectation from oneself. This approach turns the disease of expectation into a cure. The disease of expectation is attached to the 'I' or the ego. By making the expectation for the Supreme so large, it becomes the medicine that dissolves the 'I'. The ego itself is a disease that thrives on smallness and cannot tolerate anything vast or infinite. When the expectation becomes infinitely large, it destroys the ego, and with the dissolution of the 'I', the disease of expectation also disappears. This is the counter-attack on the disease.
