Acharya Prashant addresses the question of why superhero films are so successful. He explains that when mediocrity is normalized, people are compelled to look for excellence in unexpected places. In the name of democracy and liberal values, mediocrity has been normalized to no end. For instance, calling a fat person fat is now considered body-shaming. In the name of freedom of speech, a Buddha and a drunkard are given equal time to speak. In a democracy, a Buddha and the laziest person on the planet each have one vote. This institutionalization of mediocrity is pervasive. This normalization of mediocrity extends to culture, including films and literature. A film producer, wanting to make a profit, will create a movie that appeals to the masses, which means making the most mediocre kind of movie. Similarly, authors know that readers are often mediocre, so they write mediocre books that become bestsellers. In this environment of overwhelming mediocrity, there is a complete domination of the mediocre in every field of human activity. Even where excellence exists, it has been made subservient to mediocrity. For example, a sophisticated piece of equipment like a mobile phone is often used for the worst purposes. Despite this, there is a point within everyone that loves excellence, irrespective of how mediocre one is. This inner point, which is at the center of all spirituality, cannot be killed. Even someone who has made the gutter their home still has a part that loves the stars. This is the love for the 'Superman,' a concept from Friedrich Nietzsche, who described it as the end goal of all evolution. We exist for the sake of this Superman. Superhero movies are caricatures of this real Superman, and we fall in love with them because they represent a victory over human limitations. However, this is just temporary entertainment. The real Superman is the one who has conquered himself, the evil within. The purpose of human life and religion is to give birth to this Superman within us, not to find solace in movie theaters.
