Description

Acharya Prashant explains that his life's path was not the result of a single moment of decision but an entire process. He was fortunate to have been exposed to various kinds of books and random literature from a young age through his father's library. He describes this early learning as an "unattended bush growing up in very random ways," where the branching out was real and led to a lot going on in his consciousness. He clarifies that it was not a one-point, one-day, or one-moment kind of decision. He recounts several significant events during his time at the IIM Ahmedabad campus between 2001 and 2003 that served as catalysts for his thinking. He witnessed the aftermath of the 2001 Bhuj earthquake, the 9/11 attacks, and the 2002 Gujarat riots firsthand. These experiences forced him to question the primacy of money, material possessions, and so-called happiness, prompting him to apply his analytical skills to the world at large. He felt that a living being's sense of inquiry and logical skills are not just for balance sheets or strategy problems but for understanding life itself. His inclination towards literature led him to take a course on Leadership, Vision, Meaning, and Reality, which included works like Iravati Karve's 'Yuganta', 'Don Quixote', Ibsen's plays, and Hermann Hesse's 'Siddhartha'. This course helped him see clearly that the subjective, emotional side of life is very important, even in hardcore managerial decision-making. This realization gave him a clue, and after graduating, he designed his own courses based on spiritual literature. He began teaching these courses at various institutions, realizing that the general population, not just managers, is deeply in need of wisdom inputs. He concludes by stating that this journey was a process that is still continuing, and his own reading has become more purposeful and directed over time.
