Acharya Prashant explains that duty or obligation refers to a predefined set of rules governing how two people should behave toward each other. Duty is primarily concerned with external conduct and actions, having very little to do with what is in one's heart. It is a limited, bound, and predictable path. In contrast, love is free and unlimited; it does not follow a fixed track. While a mother performing her duty follows a set boundary of care, love allows for actions in any direction, ranging from doing very little to doing an immense amount. Duty is convenient for a lazy mind because it provides ready-made instructions on how to behave, such as showing respect to elders or performing specific tasks at set times, without requiring any original thought or genuine connection.
