Description

Acharya Prashant addresses the question of how to determine who is worthy of being a role model and who to be influenced by. He begins by defining what it means to be influenced: it is when an external person or thing changes the state of our mind, shaking it from its original position. After coming into contact with an influence, we are no longer the same as before. This change can be in one of two directions: either our mind becomes better than it was, or it becomes worse. The speaker then elaborates on the meaning of becoming 'better' versus 'worse'. A person becomes better when their mind becomes clearer, they are less fearful, they understand things more deeply, and they can remain calm amidst provocations. A better person can firmly do the right thing because they can clearly see what is right. Conversely, a person becomes worse when they are more restless, deluded, and their mind is foggy. They are easily swayed by temptation and fear and cannot stick to a single thought or resolution. We all inherently want to become better, and the definitions of 'betterment'—such as height, peace, clarity, and fearlessness—are largely universal. Acharya Prashant cautions that becoming better is always a laborious and difficult process, while becoming worse is initially easy. Therefore, it is far easier for someone to influence you by making you worse. He states that 99 out of 100 people are not worthy of influencing you, as their company will cause you to fall. One should be wary of anyone who seems instantly attractive, as it is likely a trap. The things that are truly good for you will often seem bitter, like poison, at first, a concept he relates to the Sattvic happiness described in the Bhagavad Gita. The world is full of people with their own vested interests, trying to sell you things by making you fall. We are like animals fresh out of the jungle, easily swayed by base instincts, and thus must be extremely cautious about who we allow to influence us.
