Description

Acharya Prashant addresses the question of whether parents are selfish. He explains using an analogy of a hypothetical extremely selfish young man named Aryan. He posits that if Aryan, who is 26 and selfish, becomes a father at 27, he will not suddenly become selfless. Just as Aryan would not become an embodiment of selflessness, a person does not magically become unselfish or an embodiment of compassion simply by becoming a parent. Before becoming parents, they are extremely selfish, and this does not change with parenthood. He extends this logic to ignorance, stating that an ignorant person who gives poisonous advice to others will offer the same to their own children. When children question their parents, they are often labeled as rebels who are 'out of their hands'. This is said by the parents themselves, but it does not prove that they are not unconscious or ignorant. Acharya Prashant cautions that if the parents are ignorant, the children are equally so and should not consider themselves great sages. He quotes a saying: 'When an ignorant person meets another ignorant person, they just bang their heads,' which he says is the state of most families where unconscious parents and children are in constant conflict. To develop a discerning eye and see people rationally without deifying them, one must get acquainted with the true great figures of the world, like Shri Krishna or Buddha. He uses the proverb, 'Now the camel is under the mountain,' explaining that one can only judge the height of a camel after seeing the Himalayas. Without a high standard for comparison, even a camel or a goat will seem tall. This understanding comes from 'satsang'—associating with the truth, which can be done by reading the highest spiritual literature and the biographies of great personalities. Once you know what true height is, you can inspire the people around you, who may have never had such exposure, to rise higher.
