Description

Acharya Prashant addresses the issue of the climate crisis by stating that its cause is so obvious and simple that people prefer not to look at it. He explains that while people seek dramatic solutions for complex problems, the climate crisis is not complex, and its solution is evident. He rhetorically asks who is causing the heat and emissions, dismissing animals and nature, and concludes that humans are solely responsible. The core of the problem, he asserts, can be understood through a simple formula: the number of people multiplied by their per capita consumption is proportional to greenhouse gas emissions. Once released, these gases remain in the atmosphere for hundreds of years, making the damage very difficult to reverse. The speaker elaborates on the concept of negative feedback loops that have already been triggered and are now unstoppable, comparing them to a stone rolling down a slope. He provides an example: as climate change melts white, reflective ice, it exposes dark, heat-absorbing rock, which in turn absorbs more heat and melts more ice, creating a vicious cycle. He states that it is futile and dishonest to look for objective reasons for the crisis because the only cause is the human tendency to proliferate and blindly consume. This, he says, is the very definition of success and happiness in modern society: to have more and consume more. Acharya Prashant points out that the common dream for one's life, often encouraged by parents and society, is to get a good job, a house, a spouse, and have children. This translates to a life dedicated to consumption and producing more bodies to consume. The societal ideal is for one person to become three (a couple with a child) and for per capita consumption to increase tenfold or even a hundredfold. He concludes that these very dreams have become the curse of the planet. We are now in the sixth mass extinction phase, with species disappearing at a rate 1000 times faster than the natural rate, all due to human actions driven by these dreams. People are unwilling to confront this reality because it would mean challenging their most cherished aspirations, even as the planet is being destroyed for millions of years to come.
