With Gautier Houel: Can Inner Transformation Still Save the Planet?

Acharya Prashant joined former climate diplomat Gautier Houel for a fireside conversation during London Climate Action Week 2026 on 25 June, organised around a single question: whether inner transformation can still save the planet, or whether that point has already passed. The exchange drew a large audience.

Acharya Prashant’s answer refused the terms in which the crisis is usually posed. The climate emergency, he said, is not at its root an environmental problem but a problem of relationship, the relationship between an insatiable consumer and the external world that consumer seeks to draw in and use up. He noted that the 1.5 degree threshold had been breached repeatedly across the preceding three years, and warned that little would change while humanity continued to rely on knowledge and policy alone, since knowledge itself turns violent when it is not guided by love.

Several of his formulations landed with the audience. “Carbon is emitted from our inner emptiness. Excessive emissions arise not from genuine human needs, but from blind desires,” he said. The prevailing definition of success, he argued, sits at the very root of climate destruction, and as long as success is measured by an ever larger carbon footprint nothing of substance will move. He closed one line of thought with a deliberately unsettling instruction: “The universe does not require more of your activism and more of your intervention. The universe requires your withdrawal. Withdraw.”

The conversation belongs to the second leg of a tour that has carried the philosophy of Vedanta to a sequence of prominent platforms. He resumed the tour with a keynote address at the London School of Economics on 24 June and a public session on the Avadhuta Gita earlier on 25 June.
