Description

Acharya Prashant addresses the question of whether one should leave their job for a spiritual path. He advises that the question "Should I leave this?" comes after the question, "Where am I going that is better than this?" He clarifies that his own decision to leave his job was not a blind one; he could see a faint light in a certain direction and knew he had to move towards it, even without full clarity of the destination. He emphasizes that life is meant for continuous internal progress, not for getting stuck in one place. It is everyone's right and duty to seek or create something better for themselves. Whatever work one does, it is not for a lifetime, and there is always a possibility of doing something better. If a person is an SHO, there is surely something better than that, but one must first search for or establish that better alternative before leaving the current one. The speaker explains that the ultimate goal is internal progress. While external progress, like earning more money, is good, it is only beneficial if it facilitates internal growth. Often, external accumulation does not lead to internal upliftment and can even cause an internal fall. The purpose of life is internal progress, and if a better job facilitates this, one should pursue it. He warns against making hasty decisions based on a surge of spiritual enthusiasm, which can be a form of illusion (Maya). One should not impulsively quit their job, business, or home, only to regret it later. This can lead to a situation of losing both the material and the spiritual. A serious life decision requires serious preparation. Using the analogy of launching a rocket, he states that the higher one wants to jump, the more preparation is needed to achieve "escape velocity" and not fall back. He advises preparing for six months to a year before taking a major step. He also uses the analogy of Shri Krishna as Arjun's charioteer, who always positioned him correctly for battle. Similarly, one must find the right place to fight their spiritual battle. This right place could even be one's current job, like the questioner's police station, if it allows for a righteous fight and internal growth. One must assess their own situation to determine if their current role is the right battlefield or if they must move on.
