Acharya Prashant responds to a question about the relevance of ancient texts to contemporary problems like social media. He explains that Vedanta investigates the mind. The mind's deepest desire and ultimate destiny is liberation, yet it is habituated to all kinds of bondages. This condition is what is called human consciousness. Our inclinations, tendencies, and habits are at odds with our welfare. We need to be liberated, but we want and slip towards bondages. The mind is easily attracted to pomp, show, sexuality, and displays of riches. It likes to be entertained and sometimes deliberately keeps itself in illusions. The mind slips easily towards falseness but requires discipline and deliberate effort to rise towards knowledge, understanding, and liberation. With the mind being this way, social media technology has become a tool for it. The mind feels lonely and craves company and social attention, which social media provides. The easiest way to gain attention is to peddle mischief, as others are also attracted to it. The lowest common denominator spreads like wildfire, and the worst about us is the fastest to spread, becoming mainstream. This leads to a situation where people who should be in asylums or jails become social media idols and superstars. The problems seen with social media are a tiny reflection of the real catastrophe at hand. Regulation is now impractical and impossible because there are billions of faceless, anonymous mischief-makers, and the types of mischief are subjective and numerous. The only solution is individual responsibility, which requires a cultural environment with spirituality at its center. This is not idealism but the only practical solution. Real spirituality and core self-inquiry must become part of mainstream education, which cannot remain merely a means to earn a living. Humanity is in a historical emergency and does not have much time left. We must be awakened very quickly. When asked if there is hope, Acharya Prashant states that there is no option, making hope irrelevant. One must work towards the right and try until the last because there is no other choice. While the task is difficult, being on the right side makes it easier because righteousness itself supports you from within. It is a better deal to be on the right side of consciousness.
