Description

Acharya Prashant addresses the question of how to achieve freedom from thoughts, challenging the common misconception that peace requires the total absence of thought. He explains that as long as one is alive, thoughts will exist in some form. The true art of living is to remain thoughtless or still even in the midst of thoughts. He uses the analogy of a fan, where the blades rotate rapidly while the central axis remains perfectly still. If the axis also began to move, the fan would become unstable and dangerous. Similarly, a mind without thoughts is useless, but a mind where the center is unstable causes chaos for the individual and those around them. He clarifies that freedom from thought does not mean the murder or absence of thoughts, but rather not being dominated by them. He introduces the concept of the Witness, or 'Sakshi', explaining the difference between a participant and a witness. While a participant gets involved in the movement of thoughts, a witness simply observes them without being swayed. He advises against fighting thoughts, as resistance often gives them more power. Instead, one should allow thoughts to come and go—whether they are thoughts of anger, restlessness, or desire—without acting upon them or letting them take control. By remaining a silent observer in the middle of mental activity, one finds true peace.
