Acharya Prashant responds to a question from a 23-year-old software developer who is struggling with a lack of discipline and lustful thoughts, and who questions how he can attain liberation without engaging with these thoughts. Acharya Prashant explains that discipline is a very simple and natural matter. It means that the mind is so close to the Self (Atma) that the Self naturally governs it. When the mind is so in love with the Self, it comes under its rule; this is discipline. He clarifies that this is not the ego trying to discipline itself, but rather the rule of the Self, which is true self-discipline. Let the Self be your master, let Truth be your master; this is the discipline that is needed. Discipline happens on its own when you are close to the Truth because Truth is beautiful and has a great attraction. You cannot ignore or neglect it, and it does not need to use force. Its nature is such that you are compelled to follow it. If you find there is no discipline in your life, it means the subject you are engaged with does not have enough life in it to discipline you. Therefore, do not try to discipline yourself; instead, find a suitable subject. Or, if you are already engaged with a subject, try to recognize its truth. If the subject has substance, it will bind you on its own. If it lacks substance, it will become clear that you must move beyond it. The lack of discipline, the wandering of the mind, and the arising of desires are common problems because people have set meaningless and worthless goals for themselves. They have a habit of choosing worthless goals, so even when a valuable goal appears, they do not understand its importance. The mind can only love Truth; it has an ancient lover and cannot fall in love with anything else. When you are engaged in a higher goal, your desires also become sublime and reach a higher level. Renunciation is at the core of all spirituality. You are the Self, the highest of the high; do not get stuck in lower places. Renounce the insult of being stuck. The things you have mistakenly held onto are worthy of being renounced. The sign that you have held onto something wrong is the lack of discipline, a wandering mind, and the arising of desires.
