Acharya Prashant responds to a question about why various revolutions—such as the Green, White, Industrial, and Information revolutions—have not solved humanity's problems, and in fact, mental and physical illnesses have increased. He begins by stating that whenever a human does something, the medium for that action is the human himself. Looking at history, one finds that both good and bad have been accomplished through the medium of humans. It cannot be said that humans only do bad things. Everything in the world that one considers good is also a creation of man. Therefore, there is no need to become excessively pessimistic, negative, or cynical. He explains that there are two kinds of mistakes. The first is when a person says, "I am nothing, and all power lies in some external entity." This leads to inaction, pessimism, and fatalism. The person thinks, "What is the use of my doing anything? Someone else from outside will do it." The second mistake, which is the opposite, is to believe, "There is nothing outside; we are everything. We have all the power, all the light, we will think, we will understand, we will do it." He notes that while India has suffered from the first mistake in the past, the entire world, including India, is currently going through the phase of the second mistake. Both these mistakes must be avoided. In the first mistake, you make a self-conceived external power your center, kneel before an imaginary God, and refuse to use your own intelligence and mental faculties. In the second mistake, which often arises as a reaction to the first, one asserts, "We will show them, we are the masters." Spirituality is the real, internal revolution. All other revolutions—political, technological, etc.—are external; they change external systems, ideologies, or lifestyles. Spirituality is the only revolution that is internal. Internal revolution means accepting that the need for change is first within, because whatever is outside is our own creation, and we are the ones who give it meaning. Since all suffering is experienced internally, the change must begin from within. When this internal change occurs, one understands that there is a foolish entity within that has a tendency to go astray, thinks it is very clever, and considers itself the master of all. This entity must be told to keep its head bowed. When one works with a bowed head, life becomes a celebration. When one lives with an inflated ego, life becomes miserable. Spirituality teaches one to do everything and live a very active life, but with the head bowed in surrender.
