Description

Acharya Prashant explains that the persistence of mental tendencies, or 'vrittis', is due to our habit of justifying them as correct. When we fail to wake up to an alarm, we convince ourselves in that moment that sleeping is the right choice. He emphasizes that falsehood cannot survive by calling itself a lie; it must masquerade as the truth. To overcome these tendencies, one must unmask them and recognize them as enemies rather than well-wishers. By giving honorable names to harmful habits, we continue to value and preserve them in our lives. Spiritual practice involves identifying what is truly detrimental to our interests and refusing to support it. He further suggests that even if one fails and succumbs to a tendency, like oversleeping, one should not simply ignore the failure. Instead of moving on as if nothing happened to protect the ego, one must pause and acknowledge the mistake. He notes that we often hide our flaws because we still find some value in them or wish to protect our image. Acharya Prashant asserts that once we truly perceive something as 'trash' or harmful, we will naturally stop trying to hide or preserve it. Realizing the source of our suffering, such as identifying laziness as the cause of physical unfitness, is essential to prevent the repetition of wrong actions.
