Description

Acharya Prashant addresses the dilemma of choosing the right books in a world filled with infinite information and limited time. He explains that the fundamental question is not about the book itself, but about the nature of the reader, whom he identifies as the ego or the self. To determine what is truly good for the ego, one must look for two parallel effects. First, the right book, person, or decision will not be pleasant; it will cause repulsion and resistance because it acts to dissolve the ego. The ego seeks relief from itself but simultaneously fears its own dissolution, leading to a natural urge to escape from what is truly essential. Second, despite the initial repulsion, one will find it impossible to stay away for long. The truth creates an inner hollowness and a sense of missing something vital, eventually forcing a return to the source of wisdom. He emphasizes that the mark of rightness is whether something pulls the individual toward peace and silence, even if it causes initial disturbance or discomfort. He warns against seeking books that merely comfort or validate existing beliefs, as the ego often uses such literature to justify its current state. Instead, he advises seeking books and teachers that are difficult to co-opt or manipulate. While books are important instruments for liberation, they can also become tools for human slavery if they are interpreted solely for personal convenience. Ultimately, he encourages choosing the difficult path of self-dissolution over the easy path of conditioning, as the deepest human desire is for truth and total relaxation, which cannot be achieved through existing tendencies.
