Acharya Prashant defines folk religion as a direction chosen by the ego based on tradition and habit rather than spiritual truth. He explains that the ego is attracted to folk religion because it offers security and requires no independent thinking or experimentation. It conflates habit with spirituality and convenience with meditation. The primary justification used by its followers is survival; they believe that because a tradition has survived for centuries, it must be superior. However, Acharya Prashant clarifies that survival is a biological trait shared even by insects and trees, whereas true spirituality is about dignity and the quality of life, not just longevity or population growth. He argues that true religion is about the quality of one's consciousness rather than the quantity of followers or the age of a tradition.
