Description

Acharya Prashant addresses a question about the phrase "Ram Naam Satya Hai" (The name of Ram is truth), which is chanted during funeral processions. The questioner recalls being scolded as a child for uttering these words casually, as they were considered inauspicious. Acharya Prashant begins by humorously imitating the mechanical and disengaged manner in which people chant this phrase, sometimes while chewing tobacco or getting distracted. He notes that people have turned this profound statement into a joke, such as "Ram Naam Satya Hai, Murda Bada Mast Hai" (The name of Ram is truth, the corpse is having a great time). He explains that the common person, the householder, is not truly concerned with spiritual truths like liberation, the soul, or Brahman. Their primary focus is on their worldly life, their daily sustenance, and ordinary pleasures. For them, religion is merely a support for their worldly existence. They are religious only to the extent that it helps their worldly life. Death, however, shatters this bubble of worldly assumptions. It starkly reveals the falsehood of a life lived for the body and its pleasures. The very body for which one did everything now lies lifeless, with flies buzzing around it, and even loved ones are hesitant to touch it. Death shows that the entire foundation of one's life was a lie. This moment of death is a moment of great danger for the householder's ego because it exposes the lie of their entire life. To protect the ego from this shattering realization, the householder employs a clever tactic. They claim, "We never believed our life was the truth; we always knew 'Ram Naam Satya Hai'." This is a strategy to avoid the shock of death's revelation. If they had truly believed in the truth of Ram's name throughout their lives, they would not have chased worldly things. This is akin to the story of "sour grapes"; when worldly pleasures are lost, they are declared illusory. This, Acharya Prashant states, is a misuse of religion. People use the name of Ram (Truth) to avoid facing the truth. They turn the ultimate medicine, the name of Ram, into a mere snack, rendering it ineffective. The ego consumes even the Truth for its own sustenance. He concludes by encouraging the questioner to say "Ram Naam Satya Hai" fearlessly. He asserts that doing so will make her immortal, not bring bad luck, because people die every day precisely because they forget Ram (Truth). He references Kabir Saheb, who said, "Everyone remembers in sorrow, no one in happiness. If one remembers in happiness, why would sorrow occur?" This is the trick people play: they use the remembrance of Ram in sorrow to make the sorrow ineffective, thus saving their ego. If the sorrow were to truly affect them, their ego would break, and they would attain liberation.
