Description

Acharya Prashant explains why Shri Ram may not be appealing to most people today. He states that every era chooses its ideals and heroes according to the values of that era. The values of the current era are primarily centered around consumption. The greatest ideal of today's age is indulgence and consumption—to eat, drink, and be merry. Consequently, this era will appreciate characters and ideals who have indulged extensively in their lives. In contrast, Shri Ram's life is an example of renunciation and adherence to limits (maryada). At his father's command, he renounced the kingdom and throne that were rightfully his and went to the forest. Today, no one would want to do this; instead, the tendency is to acquire wealth, property, and power by any means, even if one is not deserving. Shri Ram, on the other hand, renounced what he had already acquired. This is why he is not a role model for the current generation, which is an era of transition where values are contracting. The speaker further elaborates that the current era is about breaking all limits, whereas Shri Ram's life was centered on 'maryada' (adherence to limits). He was monogamous, and when Shurpanakha approached him, he stated he was devoted to Sita. Today's ideal is to have multiple partners. Ram's character has as much femininity as it has strength; he is emotional and gentle. He cries when Lakshman is hurt and affectionately strokes a squirrel. This contrasts with the modern ideal of a tough, macho man. Ram is not someone who performs dazzling miracles; he is very ordinary. He depends on Hanuman to find medicine for Lakshman. Today, who wants to be ordinary or shed tears? The speaker concludes that if we do not understand Shri Ram, it is not his fault but a reflection of our fallen consciousness. The values he represents are not appealing to us because our own values are different.
