Description

Acharya Prashant explains verses from the Ajagar Gita, which is a part of the Shanti Parva of the Mahabharata. He sets the context of a dialogue between an Avadhuta (a liberated sage) and King Prahlada. The Avadhuta states that he sees death everywhere—in powerful birds, in falling constellations, and in all beings. Knowing this truth, he is fulfilled and sleeps happily with an equal attitude towards all. In response to a question about why one doesn't feel the world is transient even after seeing death, Acharya Prashant clarifies that the transience of the world is not realized merely by witnessing the event of death. For most, life is a long experience of being 'not-dead' (a-mrit), while death is a brief, momentary event. Modern advancements have made the event of death even rarer and more distant. Furthermore, death is often concealed or given attractive names like 'development.' The world appears transient only to the one who sees death even in their own life. One becomes detached from life only when they see death in life itself. The one who waits for the life-breath to depart to consider themselves dead will remain trapped. The wise person says, 'I am already dead. What is there in me that I can call alive? Is this even a life?' He explains that a person is dead if their life is not run by the soul (Atma) but by social or physical influences. The sign of being dead is not the cessation of movement, as even a corpse can be moved by external forces. The sign is the absence of self-willed action. Acharya Prashant elaborates that most people's actions are driven by either society or the body. They are not truly alive; things are just happening to them. They don't exist as independent actors. The one who realizes this mechanical, dead-like existence will see the transience of their current life. Only then can real life begin for them. He who only sees death in the event of death will remain attached to life. One becomes detached from life only when one sees death in life itself.
