Description

Acharya Prashant explains that every word of the Rishis is intended for the peace of the listener's restless mind. This is the sole purpose of the Upanishads. Everything said is from a particular state of being. The absolute, independent, aimless, and purposeless Truth cannot be spoken. Therefore, whatever is said is always for the benefit of a limited entity. The infinite Truth cannot be described in words. What is said in the Upanishads is for the benefit of the mind. One should not seek truthfulness in them, but rather their utility. The statement, "There is nothing superior to Truth or Brahman," is not very appropriate because there is no 'other' besides Truth or Brahman. If there is no other, how can something be superior or inferior? This statement is made in a limited context, for the mind, which sees many different things and considers some superior and some inferior. The statement should be understood as: "For you, there is nothing superior to Brahman." Everything is within Brahman, so how can a part be superior to the whole? The scale on which you weigh the whole is also within the whole. We are constantly in a process of choosing, which is our bondage. The Upanishads teach us the right way to choose. They say, "For you, Brahman is the highest. Whenever you have to choose, choose Brahman." However, in our daily choices, Brahman is not an available option. The speaker advises using the process of negation. Reject everything that has characteristics contrary to Brahman. Brahman is described as homeless, unknowable, without support, without attributes, unattached, non-dual, and alone. Use these as a guide. If a choice binds you to a worldly object or person, it is not the path of Brahman. If a choice is attractive due to past knowledge or experiences, it is not the path of Brahman. The path of Brahman is beyond attributes, while the paths that attract us are full of attributes, which is the realm of Prakriti or Maya. The path of Brahman is without support; if a path makes you dependent, avoid it. Choose the path that makes you self-reliant. The path of Brahman is unattached; choose the company that liberates you from the need for company. The path of Brahman is non-dual; do not join your identity with another. In essence, the Upanishads provide Brahman as the criterion for making choices in life.
