Description

Acharya Prashant explains that spirituality is often misunderstood as a form of forced asceticism or a series of unnecessary sacrifices. He observes that many people, upon starting a spiritual journey, begin to abandon harmless activities like playing, traveling, or socializing, believing that such renunciation is a requirement. He clarifies that Shri Krishna and the Bhagavad Gita do not demand the abandonment of life's simple, natural joys. Instead, spirituality is about discarding what is truly harmful or foolish, not what is life-affirming. He warns that suppressing natural desires and imposing rigid, artificial restrictions—such as avoiding certain foods or social interactions—only leads to a joyless life and eventual failure in spiritual practice. He emphasizes that true spirituality is 'super liberal' and does not impose bans on clothing, movies, or simple pleasures like dancing in the rain or enjoying a vacation. The only real prohibition in spirituality is against ignorance and foolishness. He points out that traditional religious structures often focus on trivial restrictions while allowing ignorance to flourish, whereas authentic spirituality encourages living with awareness. He advises the questioner to enjoy life's simple, free pleasures and to distinguish between what is genuinely obstructive and what is merely a natural part of being alive. One should act with consciousness rather than following a list of arbitrary 'dos and don'ts'.
