Description

Acharya Prashant responds to a question about letting the new generation learn from life's experiences rather than through spoken knowledge. He begins by asking the questioner if he himself has gained knowledge by simply living. The speaker identifies a very false and dangerous assumption at the root of such questions: the belief that a human being is born to naturally and independently attain understanding, enlightenment, or liberation. He asserts that this is not how we are made; it is not the will of nature (Prakriti). The speaker explains that a human child is not born to become wise. He refutes the idea that in the natural course of events, one will automatically gain understanding. To illustrate, he suggests leaving a child in the jungle and observing that the only thing he will achieve is a lot of hair. Nature will teach him survival skills and instincts, but not liberation. We are born flawed, a truth the ego dislikes hearing. We are not born for wisdom, peace, liberation, or even love; these qualities must be earned through great effort and spiritual practice (Sadhana). The speaker emphasizes that the probability of remaining stuck in this natural, conditioned state is 99.99%. He then addresses the idea of gurus who speak from the heart without needing books, explaining that the wise ones who understood the truth were not foolish to write scriptures. They wrote them precisely so others could benefit. He advises reading the scriptures that speak of the Self with depth and respect, as they are the only thing worth knowing. We are not satisfied with how we are, and to change, these books are useful. Believing that truth can be found simply by closing one's eyes is a lazy and easy path, whereas true understanding requires tremendous effort and guidance.
