Description

Acharya Prashant advises a philosophy student who is confused about her career path, specifically whether to pursue a PhD or work as an educator. He suggests that when one cannot make up their mind, experimentation is helpful. He recommends probing both options. She can begin the process for her PhD and see how far her heart allows her to go. If her self resists even the initial steps, she will realize she cannot stay in it for the next three to five years. Similarly, she should explore working as an educator to see if that life conforms to her image. He explains that there is no harm in changing or reversing choices; in fact, much greater harm lies in rigid choices. The interests of the chooser are paramount, not the choices themselves, which are all disposable and reversible. One does not exist for the sake of defending their choices. He states that it is a mark of inner growth to want to reverse the choices made in the past. As a person evolves, they become a better person, and this better person cannot live by the choices made by a relatively inferior past self. Acharya Prashant clarifies that there will never be absolute clarity for the normal consciousness; there will always be confusion and an in-between state. In such situations, the only solution is experimentation. Experimentation is a way of self-knowledge. When you try something, you discover how your mind responds to it; without trying, all you have are assumptions. He encourages the questioner to discover her own truth, as his words can at best help her ask the right questions, but the answer must emerge from within.
