Acharya Prashant explains that the root cause of the climate catastrophe is the human tendency to consume, which manifests in three ways: the consumption of other human beings, man-made things, and natural resources. He asserts that procreation is the single largest contributor to carbon emissions, as bringing one child into the world is equivalent to cutting down over a hundred thousand trees. He argues that even veganism is insufficient because the earth lacks the resources to support billions of people, regardless of their diet. He highlights that both high consumption, as seen in the United States, and high population, as seen in China, lead to environmental destruction. Acharya Prashant proposes a two-fold solution to the climate crisis. First, the global population must be reduced from eight billion to a sustainable limit of two or three billion through education and the discouragement of reproduction. Second, the remaining population must be deeply spiritual. He explains that the urge to consume is actually a misidentified and thwarted urge for liberation; without a spiritual outlet, human energy inevitably flows toward consumption. He criticizes current climate activism as symbolic and ego-driven, stating that legislative changes and tree planting are merely cosmetic steps that cannot reverse the damage already done. Real action, according to him, requires a fundamental spiritual transformation and a significant reduction in human numbers.
