Description

In response to a question about how to know oneself and separate from the mind and body, Acharya Prashant explains that the way to know is to observe what happens when you want to do something that is very close to your heart. You will find that when you want to do something very important, the body becomes an obstacle. For instance, if you have to reach somewhere urgently, a matter of life and death, the body might say, 'Let's eat first' or 'Let's sleep.' In those moments, you will understand that you are not the body, as the body's intentions are very different from yours. Acharya Prashant elaborates that one should observe their fundamental desire and will find that it does not align with the desires of the body. The body's desires are the same as those of a monkey, a horse, an elephant, or even an amoeba. The body, despite its physical evolution, has not evolved in its consciousness; the brain has not been able to shed its old instincts. While intellect has developed, it remains a slave to these old instincts. The consciousness that is related to the body is just like that of a monkey. Ultimately, you have to decide which level of consciousness you want to live on. You can choose to live a life like a monkey, driven by the same primal needs for food, dominance, and reproduction, but you will do so with more intellectual sophistication and ego. A monkey runs after a banana; you run after money. A monkey shows its teeth to claim territory; you do the same with more sophistication. The other option is to decide that the jungle is behind you and you do not want to live like the monkey within. You can choose to reach higher levels of consciousness, to know more, understand more, and become more. The choice is yours to make.
