Description

Acharya Prashant advises against giving excessive importance to the concepts of concentration and distraction, noting that the mind simply follows its interests. He explains that our typical relationship with the mind is one of conflict, where either the mind rules us or we attempt to rule the mind through suppression. Neither of these approaches is healthy because they create a violent internal battle. Since one is essentially their own mind, trying to control it leads to a division against oneself. Instead of control or indulgence, Acharya Prashant suggests befriending the mind. This involves a third approach called witnessing, where one remains present and aware of the mind's movements without judgment. Rather than forcing the mind to study when it wants to do something else, he suggests following the mind's interest as a silent observer. By being a friend who does not judge or leave the mind alone, one can discover the underlying reasons, patterns, and conditioning that cause the mind to rush in certain directions. This awareness and understanding naturally change the functioning of the mind and resolve the feeling of being distracted.
