Description

Acharya Prashant explains that for most people, the meaning of work is limited to designation, salary, and perhaps some interest, which also includes the brand of the company. He describes this kind of work as the dharma of a mule or the karma of a donkey. This is work done merely to fill one's stomach and pockets and to nourish the ego. A human being is one who performs meaningful work (sarthak karma). Meaningful work is defined in two ways: either one works to sever their bondages, or one works out of their own joy, not needing anything, simply because there is joy in the action itself. This is the only true definition of work. In English, this means, "Either I am working towards liberation, or I am working as the liberated one." There can be no third option. If one feels they are in bondage, then they should work towards liberation. If one does not see any bondage, then they are simply operating, playing, and gamboling as the liberated one, without a single concern in the world. The speaker criticizes the modern corporate culture of constantly looking for job openings, keeping one's CV permanently on job-hunting websites, and getting excited about calls from placement agencies. He calls this a "donkey race," not even a rat race, and questions why rats are being defamed. He describes people in suits entering corporate offices as donkeys, one after another, including IITians and MBAs. He states that there is nothing special about being an IITian; it is merely professional education that prepares one for a trade. It does not signify any higher state of being. He emphasizes that only the one who has learned to do meaningful, right work is worthy of respect. Getting an education for a trade makes one, at most, a tradesman. There is no reason for pride in being a tradesman, even if one is an IITian.
