Description

Acharya Prashant explains that actions often stem from the ego even when one labels them as spontaneous or natural. He emphasizes that the distinction between a mechanical reaction of the ego and a true response from the self can only be known by the individual through self-awareness. He asserts that sensitivity and understanding cannot be externally imposed; a teacher can only provoke the understanding that is already latent within the student. Claiming total ignorance or confusion is often a tool used by the ego to avoid taking necessary action or to buy time. He further distinguishes between mechanical spontaneity, which arises from biological tendencies (vritti), and true spontaneity. Mechanical reactions, like laughing when tickled, are accompanied by a sense of helplessness or compulsion. In contrast, true spontaneity is characterized by inner strength and a lack of compulsion. Acharya Prashant also differentiates between being adamant and being sure. Adamancy is a disease of the ego that requires constant self-assertion and stems from fear, whereas sureness is one's natural state that does not need to prove itself. True faith or sureness is unshakable because it makes no claims and is comfortable even with the appearance of losing, as it remains rooted in the truth.
