Description

Acharya Prashant addresses a questioner who is troubled by an addiction and wants to focus on his career. The speaker explains that the addiction and the concern for a career are on the same level. Moving from one to the other is not a transformation but merely a change of object. If you leave one for the other, you will return to the first with the same speed because both are on the same plane. The underlying issue is a void in life, and the mind latches onto whatever is available, be it an addiction or a career. The speaker emphasizes that wanting to shift focus from an addiction to a career is like wanting to change the master, not the slavery itself. He states, "The real man is not one who changes the master, but one who changes the slavery." It is easy to change masters, but the fundamental state of slavery remains. He points out that the person is essentially asking for a remedy to move from one worldly influence to another, from being caught in one net to another. This is not progress. Acharya Prashant advises that the first step is to bring peace to the mind. He suggests associating with mature people, reading literature that brings peace, and adopting practices that free one from the self. The source of all mental afflictions is one's company (sangat)—what one sees, eats, hears, and who one is physically close to. When one takes care of these aspects, the mind becomes pure. When the mind is purified, not just one but all diseases are cured simultaneously, as they all have the same root. The real solution is to end the state of slavery, not to switch from one form of it to another.
