Description

Acharya Prashant explains a couplet by Kabir Saheb: "Never condemn a straw, even if it is under your feet. If it ever flies and falls into your eyes, it will cause great pain." He clarifies that the common interpretation—not to neglect even the smallest things—is superficial. This perception arises from the ego, which is inherently limited and views the world through measurement and discrimination, labeling things as big or small, important or negligible. The act of assigning importance or not is a habit of the ego. The speaker elaborates that Kabir's message is not that small things are valuable because they can cause harm, but that nothing is inherently small or large. The straw is not merely a straw; it is a manifestation of the One, just like everything else. The ego-centric viewpoint, conditioned by time and circumstances, reduces it to a mere straw. The ego creates these distinctions; otherwise, everything is simply the One. The existence of the straw, the mountain, and the self are all manifestations of the same ego-element. To see things as they truly are, one must transcend the ego's divisive vision. The pain caused by the straw is a message, not a testament to its value. It serves to prove that one's understanding of the straw as insignificant was flawed. The constant pain and shocks experienced in life are indications that our perception of the world is incorrect. If our understanding were accurate, our expectations would not be so frequently shattered. This pain is a call to awaken and realize that the world is not as we perceive it. It is a message from the Supreme, pointing to the error in our way of seeing.
